WFIU Public Radio and WTIU Public Television will host an open house Thursday, October 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Radio-TV Building on the Indiana University Bloomington campus (1229 E. 7th St.). The community is invited to this free event to get an insider’s look at public broadcasting. This year’s open house will celebrate two milestones: the 10th anniversary of WTIU’s local news program, Indiana Newsdesk, and the 80th birthday of Bob Ross, who made his mark on public television and popular culture with his series The Joy of Painting. The event will include tours of the WFIU-WTIU broadcast facilities, the opportunity to meet WFIU and WTIU personalities and learn about local programming, and the chance for guests to take pictures in a Bob Ross-themed photo booth. Light desserts and beverages will be provided. More information is available at indianapublicmedia.org/events.

Bloom is now taking submissions for their annual Wedding Guide! Send a link to a professional photo gallery and contact info for local weddings that occurred in the past 12 months to [email protected] by Oct. 10.
Bloom would like to thank the Chamber for the honor of receiving the 2022 Nancy Howard Diversity Award. It was a thrill to be recognized for Bloom's efforts to represent minority communities in Bloomington. Small businesses may not have the network security resources of a full-sized IT team, but they face the same risks as any large business, if not more. Cyber attackers are targeting small businesses more frequently, as their networks are typically more vulnerable and not as likely to have comprehensive protection in place to mitigate cyberthreats. In fact, between 2020 and 2021, data breaches at small businesses globally soared 152% in comparison to the two previous years, according to RiskRecon, a MasterCard unit that assesses companies’ cybersecurity risk – and this figure is twice as large as it was among larger companies in the same period.
Fortunately, having a strong cybersecurity plan in place is not as challenging as it used to be, especially with help from the Comcast RISE program. Comcast RISE was originally created to assist the most vulnerable small businesses dealing with the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest. Eligibility for this program is focused on businesses owned by people of color including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Asian American owners, as well as women owners, because these marginalized communities have been hit particularly hard over the past few years. Comcast RISE program recipients can choose to apply for different areas of focus including consulting services, a TV media schedule, creative production and distribution of a TV commercial, or a technology makeover. The technology makeover provides free computer equipment, internet, voice services and cybersecurity solutions for an entire year. Please state: • The event you wish to attend • Number of University Club members and number of guests As cyberattacks continue to plague businesses worldwide, Matrix Integration, a strategic IT infrastructure partner for more than 1,000 businesses and schools in the Midwest and beyond, has identified three major trends that can not only help prevent breaches, but can save their clients millions of dollars.
“From industrial manufacturers to smaller service-based businesses, we see some common threads that could help all of our clients better manage their cybersecurity,” said Tim Pritchett, security expert and engineer operations manager at Matrix Integration. “For this year’s Cybersecurity Month, it’s crucial to remember that if you haven’t been hacked yet, it’s only a matter of time before you will be. You need to be ready.” The BCSW is partnering with IU O'Neill SPEA's Fall 2022 Capstone course to collect, analyze, and report data on the everyday lives of women in Bloomington. To do this, the Capstone team is currently helping the BCSW to disseminate a survey that seeks to paint a more accurate picture of respondents' experiences. They will then use this information to help the BCSW make well-informed policy recommendations. To take this survey, click HERE and share with as many people as you can. The goal is to collect 400 responses by Oct. 27th. During the week of October 9, 2022, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) observes the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week™, the longest-running public health observance in the United States. The timing of the annual event commemorates the date of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
In support of this year's theme for Fire Prevention Week - "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape™" – fire and water cleanup and restoration specialist Ryan Wolfe of SERVPRO® of Lawrence, Owen, Greene & Martin Cos., reminds local home and business owners that the single most important thing to do when fire breaks out is to get out of the building. "This is especially true in a home fire," says Wolfe. "The NFPA warns that today's homes burn faster than ever, leaving residents two minutes or less to safely escape a home fire after the smoke alarm sounds." According to the NFPA, your ability to escape from a fire depends on two things: early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning. Their Fire Prevention Week website (https://www.nfpa.org/fpw) offers information and resources in English and Spanish to help property owners choose and maintain a smoke alarm, plan an escape route, and ensure that every person, including children and the elderly, knows what to do in case of a fire. Community members gathered to help launch the United Way of Monroe County fall fundraising drive “Rebuilding Community. Rebuilding Hope.” On Thursday, September 15, under beautiful blue skies, kick-off attendees were invited to help build a community where friends and neighbors not only weather life’s unexpected challenges but also thrive. A Community Emerges from the Pandemic:“The past year has been a time of emerging from the pandemic while facing many challenges. We saw increased demand for mental and physical health services, for food, and for affordable housing,” shared Kirk White, United Way of Monroe County Board Chair and Indiana University Vice Provost for External Relations-Bloomington and Assistant Vice President for Strategic Partnerships.
He continued, “We can be proud of the many ways United Way has been here to work on these three areas. Demand for services has increased and remains higher than in previous years. We are all here for the same purpose – we all want to embrace those challenges. And this year we are moving beyond reimagining new possibilities into actively rebuilding our community as a resilient and strong one. We are grateful for you joining us in the work ahead.” |
