Ivy Tech School of Health Sciences to host lab tour and informational session | Attendees will learn more about healthcare training options that lead to local, in-demand careers and how to get started

Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington’s School of Health Sciences is hosting an information session and training lab tour on Tuesday, July 9 at 6 p.m. in room C124. The public is invited to attend. Faculty and admissions staff will be available for questions and to help interested students get started with the application and enrollment process.

Attendees will learn more about the seven programs in the School of Health Sciences that lead to careers in nursing and other in-demand healthcare fields, including Healthcare Specialist, Kinesiology & Exercise Science, Medical Assisting, Paramedic Science, Radiation Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, and Therapeutic Massage.

Students can complete a healthcare credential to start or advance their career in as few as eight-weeks to two years. A variety of short-term certifications are tuition-free with the state’s 
Next Level Jobs (NLJ) grant for students who qualify. Some NLJ certificate programs include CNA, EMT, phlebotomy, medical assisting, outpatient insurance coding, paramedic, and massage.

WFIU to host Jazz in July concert in Columbus

This summer, WFIU Public Radio is bringing Jazz in July, a free outdoor summer concert featuring Indiana jazz musicians, to Columbus. The Al Cobine Big Band will perform at Jazz in July on Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m. at the Bartholomew County Public Library. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the Columbus Commons.
 
The performance will be emceed by David Brent Johnson, host of two of WFIU’s long-running jazz programs, Night Lights and Just You & Me. Guests may bring lawn chairs or blankets to the concert. Food trucks will also be available at the event.
 
Musical guest the Al Cobine Big Band was founded in 1956 and has continued after the death of its esteemed bandleader in 2009. The band has toured with such legends as Elvis Presley and John Denver and is well-known for the quality established when Cobine was alive.

Rural Monroe County businesses and farms qualify for up to 90% funding for Solar Power installations

There are currently two government programs, the Inflation Reduction Act and Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The Inflation Reduction Act provides a 30% tax credit plus a bonus 10% depreciation and REAP provides a 50% Grant. These programs can be used together to cover the 90% of the cost of installing a Solar Panel System on a farm or rural business. This is a unique opportunity that will not last long in today’s political environment.

WTIU earns six NATAS Central Great Lakes Emmys

The NATAS Central Great Lakes Chapter presented WTIU Public Television with six regional Emmys at its awards ceremony on Saturday, June 22.
 
WTIU’s travel series Journey Indiana received two awards for best arts/entertainment for a piece about storytelling drawing sessions at The Harrison Center and best video essayist for a story about 16mm film.
 
A documentary and concert film created for Indiana jazz musician Wes Montgomery’s centennial in 2023 were honored with three awards. Wes Bound: The Genius of Wes Montgomery won best cultural documentary and best editor for long form content. Wes Montgomery at 100: A 100th Birthday Tribute Concert won an award in the entertainment category. Over There: Hoosier Heroes of the Great War, part of WTIU’s Veterans Day programming last year, won best historical documentary.
 
The Central Great Lakes Emmy Awards recognize excellence in television among its members in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington CEO Retiring at End of 2024

Jeff Baldwin, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington, has announced he will be retiring from his position in December 2024.

Baldwin began his service to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington as Executive Director in 2006. During his 18 years of leadership, the Club has grown from having 2 Club locations serving 180 youth per day to now having 4 locations and serving over 700 kids per day across the organization. An additional 1700 youth are also served annually through Lemonade Day, the Father-Daughter Dance, Hoops Hysteria and Camp Rock- all which were established or enhanced under Jeff’s leadership.

In this role, Baldwin led an expansion project that fully renovated the Lincoln Street Club and constructed the Ferguson Crestmont Club and the Kenworthy Administration Center through an $11 million capital campaign. During the Covid crisis, the organization served youth within one month of the national shutdown, meeting needs of families in the health industry as well as first responders. Additionally, under Baldwin’s leadership, the organization recently opened a new Boys & Girls Club in Owen County, meeting the needs of 100+ youth daily.

WFIU and WTIU celebrate cellist János Starker’s 100th birthday this July with radio and TV specials

​Grammy-award winning cellist and former Indiana University Jacobs School of Music faculty member János Starker would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year on July 5.  To commemorate his centennial and to honor his exceptional career, WTIU Public Television and WFIU Public Radio will air TV and radio specials about Starker.
 
WTIU will present an encore broadcast of János Starker: A 75th Birthday Celebration on Friday, July 5 at 9 p.m. This special is hosted by violinist and former Starker student Joshua Bell and includes a new introduction for Starker’s centennial by IU Jacobs School of Music professor Emilio Colón, also a former student of Starker’s.
 
In addition to providing a new introduction for János Starker: A 75th Birthday Celebration, Colón was recently interviewed for a feature about Starker’s legacy on WTIU’s series Journey Indiana, which is available to watch online at journeyindiana.org.

Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington’s Entrepreneurship program and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) of Southwest Central Indiana are collaborating to host an Entrepreneur That! seminar on Thursday, June 27. The one-day event is designed to provide attendees with resources and next steps to get their businesses and ideas off the ground.

At the event, attendees will hear talks, engage in workshops, and network. Professionals from the South Central 
Indiana Small Business Development Center (ISBDC), Ivy Tech, and local entrepreneurs will be on hand to provide practical tips and industry connections.

The agenda includes presentations from Kristi and Kelsie-Risk Reyes, founders of the successful Pink House Sweets (formerly Diamond K Sweets); the ISBDC; Ivy Tech instructor, Monique Dallas, on social media and marketing for businesses, the Ivy Tech Entrepreneurship program, and more.
