WFIU Public Radio is partnering with Starrynight Productions and Soundbooth Theater on a new four-part audio play series adapted from L. Frank Baum’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Writer/director Russell McGee (Big Finish Doctor Who plays) and producer/actor Michael Brainard (All My Children) are collaborating with Soundbooth’s Jeff Hays to produce The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as both a radio series and podcast. Previously, McGee and Brainard worked with WFIU on the podcast and radio series The Ernie Pyle Experiment!, released in 2020. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz follows the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto. After their Kansas home is swept away by a cyclone, Dorothy and Toto find themselves in a strange land called Oz. Here Dorothy meets the Munchkins and joins the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City, where lives the all-powerful Wizard of Oz. Along the way, Dorothy and her friends must fend off the Wicked Witch of the West. The audio series features the talents of actors Franc Ross (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Deadwood), P.J. Ochlan (Emmy nominee for Young Sheldon, Little Man Tate, Police Academy: The TV Series), Greta Lind (Rudy, All My Children), Bert Rotundo (Silicon Valley, Marvel’s Agent Carter), and Leraldo Anzaldua (Gatchaman, Highschool of the Dead, Starship Troopers: Invasion), among others.

How Much Is Enough? This two-session course hosted by Indiana University Alumni Association offers an opportunity to explore the personal economics and considerations behind the age-old question of just how much is enough? According to an October 2022 report in Fortune, most Americans (65 percent) live paycheck to paycheck, including 49 percent of six-figure earners. Chasing the American dream often entails going deep into debt to buy the most house you can and filling that home with more “toys” than you need (e.g., daily Amazon deliveries). However, all that stuff is not leading to happier lives. Instead, Americans feel more overworked and stressed out than ever before. How much is enough (house, salary, car, savings, risk, etc.) depends on various factors, but studies show that learning to be content with less leads to higher levels of personal satisfaction. Also, those who let go of social pressures and achieve financial freedom early in life reap the reward of lifestyle flexibility well before the typical retirement age. The first step is understanding the psychology of money and behavioral finance. This two-part course will cover behavioral finance, define the new American dream, and set some goals. In the second session, we’ll uncover some financial secrets to help participants save money and manage debt. Ultimately, this course aims to help participants discover a personal response to just how much is enough.

Last night, the City Council approved appropriating proceeds from the recently approved public safety bonds (https://bton.in/OBxjM) for public safety facility improvements, including the purchase of 320 W. 8th Street, a section of the Showers Building adjacent to City Hall.
This purchase allows the City to relocate the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) and Bloomington Fire Department (BFD) administration offices into a unified Public Safety component as part of City Hall. The new location will provide new and much-improved facilities to employees of BFD and BPD, important opportunities to collaborate among the various public safety components, enhanced collaboration with other City Hall departments, opportunities for future expansion, and greater ease for the public when engaging with public safety-related questions or issues. “I am grateful to the City Council for their support in this step toward greater integration of City departments,” said Bloomington Fire Department Chief Jason Moore. “We are looking forward to improving the work environment for our firefighters and staff while also working more closely with other departments to better serve Bloomington.” The City of Bloomington will host the exhibition Free to Wonder: The Indiana University Prison Arts Initiative Student Exhibition in City Hall’s Atrium Gallery from January 26 - February 17, 2023.
The exhibition will feature work by ten students from Putnamville Correctional Facility who took classes in visual arts techniques, creative writing, and bookmaking taught by former and current IU graduate instructors during the fall of 2022. An opening reception will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, in the City Hall Atrium at 401 N Morton Street and will feature remarks by IUPAI facilitators and teachers. The Indiana University Prison Arts Initiative (IUPAI) began in fall of 2022 as an outreach partnership run through the IU Arts & Humanities Council. Its main goal is to send IU instructors into prisons to teach college-level courses. The fall 2022 class was the first of what the Initiative anticipates will be many classes tailored to the education levels of the students, specifically designed for students with high school diplomas but not necessarily college experience.
