The City of Bloomington’s Department of Economic and Sustainable Development is providing technical assistance and grant funding up to $25,000 for organizations and small businesses to improve building efficiency and install solar through the 2024 Solar, Energy Efficiency, & Lighting (SEEL) Program. Nonprofits, community organizations, and small businesses are invited to apply beginning March 28.

Nonprofit organizations, schools, early childhood centers, healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and small businesses with under 500 full-time employees that own at least one facility within city limits are eligible to participate. If an organization rents its facility, the organization is eligible to participate with permission to participate in the program from the property owner. A building owner form will be required to verify eligibility.

Organizations completing solar projects will receive a solar feasibility assessment from the SEEL program partner, MPI Solar, and a $25,000 grant for an 8 kW minimum solar system installation or addition. Solar applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all funding has been allocated.

Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington radiation therapy student, Braden Ballard, has been named a 2024 New Century Workforce Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Over 2,200 students from more than 1,300 college campuses nationwide were nominated and only one New Century Workforce Scholar was selected from each state.

The scholarship is the first of its kind to support students at associate degree-granting institutions on a national scale as they plan to enter the workforce upon completing a degree or certificate. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

“Winning the 2024 New Century Workforce Scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is an incredible honor. Beyond the financial assistance it provides for my education, this achievement validates my hard work and dedication to my academic and career pursuits,” Ballard said. “This scholarship opens doors to opportunities I may not have had access to otherwise, allowing me to further my education and pursue my career aspirations with confidence.”

WFIU’s ‘The Poets Weave’ to air 1000th episode March 31

WFIU Public Radio’s weekly radio program and podcast The Poets Weave reaches a milestone this Sunday when its 1,000th episode airs on March 31.

The Poets Weave was created in 2006 by Jenny Kander, who produced and hosted the program until 2009. After moving from South Africa to Bloomington in 1992, Kander promised herself that she would take poetry classes—something she never had time for previously. This began her influence in the Bloomington community as the “poetry lady,” a title she says she adores.

LuAnn Johnson, producer of The Poets Weave, is grateful to Kander for starting the program and showcasing the work of local poets.
