WHAT: Join Mayor John Hamilton and representatives from Hoosier Fiber Networks and GigabitNow in the South Griffy neighborhood (https://bton.in/4mU-Y) for exciting updates on the high-speed fiber project. Construction of the new city-wide network first began in the South Griffy neighborhood in late 2022. GigabitNow will soon begin offering service to homes physically connected to the network and continue as construction progresses throughout the city. The City of Bloomington and Hoosier Fiber Network’s groundbreaking digital equity program, one of the most innovative broadband public-private collaborations in the country, will help low-income and digitally-disadvantaged households access top-quality internet services. Eligible low-income residents may qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Plan (ACP) to receive at least a symmetrical 250 megabits per second (Mbps) plan at reduced -- or no cost to the user if ACP is applied. The City and Hoosier Fiber Networks will together provide the “drop” connection to qualifying households. WHO: Remarks from Mayor John Hamilton, Bloomington Housing Authority Administrator Leon Gordon, Hoosier Fiber Networks CEO Clint Wiley, and GigabitNow CEO/CTO Stephen Milton will address network progress, digital equity, and next steps.

Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington is accepting applications for the fall 2023 Entrepreneurship Certificate program, which helps students start and run their businesses in just three classes. Current student, Amber Racoma, started Mama Dukes Hawaiian Barbeque with her late mother’s recipes that she began learning as a teenager. “I cook and serve Hawaiian barbecue food that the locals in Hawaii love to eat with aloha,” she said. “I quit my full-time job in September 2022 to pursue mine and mother’s dream.” Racoma says the entrepreneurship program has helped her in numerous ways. “This course has provided me so many resources and tools to get my business launched,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting any of this, nor to launch until May.” rScan, Software for Selling Returns Online, Wins 2023 Crossroads Collegiate Pitch Competition3/28/2023 The Mill, Bloomington’s center for entrepreneurship, announced today that rScan won the 2023 Crossroads Collegiate Pitch Competition. Co-founders Rod Baradaran and Dmitri Brown took home a $2,500 investment from Flywheel Fund and access to their network of investors and mentors.
rScan’s app simplifies the process of selling returned merchandise online. One of three products purchased online is returned, CEO Baradaran explained in the winning pitch. Retailers accumulate pallets of returns and sell 75% of it for pennies on the dollars. rScan’s technology cuts the time to post an item for sale from 30 minutes to under two, thus making it easier for members of the general public with extra storage space to participate in the $800 billion resale market. CTO Brown explained that the technology behind the app scans the UPC code, then uses a reverse lookup algorithm to gather detailed product information, which can then be customized. The product also includes a custom returns ERP system and uses a neural network algorithm to generate price comparisons. “The Crossroads Collegiate program was a wonderful experience that brought together driven college entrepreneurs with exciting new ideas,” said Baradaran, a graduate student in the MBA program at Indiana University. “Winning the pitch competition is a great achievement for us and it provides a validation of the hard work that we have put into developing rScan. We will be using the prize money to expand our user base and add great new features that will take our app to the next level of success!” “Madeleines” is about a family of Jewish women finding ways to love each other through shared grief and the solace of baking.
