On Saturday, May 11th, local letter carriers will once again collect food for Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Sponsored locally by National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 828 and supported by the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and US Postal Service, Stamp Out Hunger is a nationwide event occurring every year on the second Saturday in May.
Community members are encouraged to place a bag or box of food at their mailbox on Saturday, May 11 and their letter carrier or a volunteer will collect it for Hoosier Hills Food Bank. The food drive is HHFB’s largest and last year’s event resulted in 35,482 pounds donated. Organizers hope to bring the total back up over the 40,000 pounds received in 2022. “I can’t overemphasize the importance of this food drive to the food bank, and the agencies and neighbors that we serve,” said HHFB Executive Director and CEO Julio Alonso. “Over half our agency partners are seeing more neighbors than last year and half say those numbers are still increasing. One-third of our agencies are not receiving enough food from us to meet the demand. This is one of the easiest ways for people to help – just put the food at your mailbox and your letter carrier will deliver it to us!” At the end of the spring semester, we host a graduation celebration, Hospitality Showcase, for our graduates with food, games, and recognition. This grad party also serves as the final project for the culinary class that cooked for the Yellowwood during the 8 weeks; this year, the class is International Cuisine and the project will focus on street food, with each student hosting their own station to serve the public...you know, street food.
This year, we decided to expand the celebration and make it a fundraiser for our 2024 student trip. A casual indoor/outdoor gathering with tables to sit or stand at, as well as a chance to walk around and mingle. Food, desserts, beverages, chef demos, tours of the culinary labs, games. Food will be self serve, but service staff will be on hand. 5:30pm - 7:30pm Thursday May 9, 2024 $40/person - Tickets can be purchased here! Festivities located at The Yellowwood and the Yellowwood Patio - 200 Daniels Way 47404, Entrance 7 All proceeds will go to our Hospitality Foundation fund for student travel. Tuesday, April 23, 2024, marked the College’s second annual Ivy Tech Day of Giving, an online fundraising event aimed at generating resources to support the more than 190,000 students statewide, and the more than 11,500 students at Ivy Tech Bloomington. The Bloomington campus received 124 gifts, totaling more than $40,000, the second highest in the state. Dollars raised go toward the area of greatest need fund. Statewide, Ivy Tech received 2,892 gifts, totaling more than $395,000 to support students across Indiana. Contributions will create opportunities for students to improve their lives while driving Indiana’s economy forward. “We are beyond thankful to all of the supporters of Ivy Tech students,” Heidi Schulz, executive director of development, said. “Funds raised by the campus and community illustrate the power of collective giving to forge futures and positively impact lives. These gifts will allow us to continue to meet our students where they are and address needs, so they are able to persist toward reaching their graduation goal.” Bloomington area nonprofits, an exciting new program has been made available to tax-exempt entities through the federal Inflation Reduction Act. Nonprofits may now apply to receive Direct Pay tax credits through the IRS for investments made into renewable energy projects, including EV purchases, solar and wind energy installations, and EV charging stations. This is a fantastic opportunity to receive financial reimbursements when installing and acquiring renewable energy systems and leverage other funding opportunities. For example, nonprofits who received a Solar, Energy Efficiency, and Lighting (SEEL) grant from the City of Bloomington in 2023 and beyond to purchase solar installations are eligible for Direct Pay Reimbursements.
