Ivy Tech Foundation will kick off Ivy Tech Day at 12:01 a.m. ET on April 23. At Ivy Tech Bloomington, there will be multiple opportunities to participate in celebrating the college throughout the day and the community is invited to campus to get involved.
Campus events:
Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington has selected Ryan Pennell, adjunct faculty in mathematics, as the recipient of the 2024 Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence in Instruction. He was named the winner among 11 adjunct faculty nominees on campus. Students submitted a total of 46 nominations. This is the second time Pennell has won the campus Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence in Instruction, the first in 2019. “Receiving the Ivy Tech Bloomington Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence in Instruction reaffirms the effectiveness of my teaching methods,” Pennell said. “This recognition fuels my dedication to guiding students on their academic journeys.” Pennell’s student nominations showed that he goes above and beyond expectations and displays a passion for teaching and learning, while ensuring his students grasp math concepts. In one nomination a student wrote that “he was the only math teacher who has helped me understand math, especially in an online course.” The Mill announced that applications are open for Code/IT Academy, a free 10-week training to grow Indiana’s tech talent pool and help Hoosiers access higher-paying jobs in the digital economy.
Thanks to a $1,370,325 grant awarded from the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI), Code/IT Academy is in the midst of a 10-county expansion in the Indiana Uplands region. As of today, applications are accepted from residents of Monroe, Crawford, Washington, Daviess, Orange, and Dubois counties. “We are incredibly grateful to READI, ROI, and the IEDC for sharing our vision of Indiana as a leader in tech, and for funding the expansion of Code/IT Academy to reach more Hoosiers,” said Pat East, Executive Director of The Mill. “The Uplands has enviable assets and opportunities for both tech companies and tech talent. Code/IT opens the door to those opportunities a little wider, to bring more folks into the new economy and its good-paying jobs.” Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington named Patrick O’Neill, assistant professor of anatomy & physiology and life & physical sciences, the winner of Ivy Tech’s 2024 President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction. He was selected among 12 full-time faculty nominees on campus. Students submitted a total of 169 nominations. “I care deeply about my students’ success, growth, and learning,” O’Neill said. “In my experience students can detect when their instructor is genuinely invested in their learning, and this is both reassuring and inspiring to them. I have found students at Ivy Tech to be resilient and gracious, and I feel privileged to be working with them.” O’Neill’s nominations prove that he has a passion for educating students and that he has positively impacted learning outcomes in the classroom. In one nomination, a student said that O’Neill has by far been the most supportive instructor they have ever had. “Mr. O’Neill has a very difficult subject to teach and has a true passion for explaining it and getting students excited about it,” the student wrote. “I would have quit and given up on nursing if wasn’t for him. If anyone deserves instructor of the year, it is him!” Always jam-packed full of handy hints and the latest news from the Consider It Done Team!

Monroe County NOW has partnered with Bloomington Transit to promote services to Spanish-speaking community members using money granted by the City of Bloomington’s Violence Reduction Grant in 2023.
The City of Bloomington announced September 1,2023, that it would fund the efforts of the Monroe County NOW “Unite to End Violence” campaign in the amount of $7300 to promote safe night-time transportation and safety in parking garages. Then-Mayor John Hamilton designated $125,000 in funding directly to support community-based efforts to prevent, intervene and reduce violence in Bloomington. The City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department administers the new Community-Based Violence Reduction Grants – a project to invest annually in evidence-based violence prevention projects offered by neighborhood-based agencies and organizations in Bloomington. “We asked residents, from students that lived off-campus to members of our neighborhoods most in need of services, what some of the biggest safety issues they had were. Parking garage safety and late night transportation were some of the biggest concerns. And we have great services, like Bloomington Transit’s Late Nite On-Demand program. I am a city council nerd and heard about the program when it started, but not everyone is aware of it. So Monroe County NOW has made it apriority to make sure as many residents know about it as we can. And having materials available in Spanish is important to us,” Monroe County NOW Vice-President Natalia Galvan said.
