About the artists:

Sam Butler is a master’s student at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and an associate instructor in the Jazz Studies Department. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Jacobs School of Music in 2022. During his time as an undergraduate, he was a semi-finalist in the Jazz Division of the 2019 and 2020 National Trumpet Competition. Butler has played with the Plummer Jazz Sextet, a select group of musicians that performs all original music. He has also recorded or performed a half dozen of his own large ensemble compositions and arrangements with various ensembles. In early 2022, Butler released Spoken Thoughts, an album of all original compositions he performed with his sextet. His music focuses on blending styles of jazz with folk, rock, and funk, with the ultimate goal of creating beautiful and memorable melodies and improvisations.

Jazz pianist Monika Herzig earned her doctorate in music education with minor fields in jazz studies at Indiana University, where she is a faculty member in arts administration. She is the author of David Baker: A Legacy in Music and Experiencing Chick Corea: A Listener’s Companion. Groups under her leadership have toured the world and opened for acts such as Tower of Power, Sting, Dixie Dregs, and more. Her awards include a 1994 DownBeat Magazine Award for Best Original Song and a 2015 Jazz Journalist Association Hero Award. Her project SHEROES with the world’s leading female jazz instrumentalists was featured on NPR’s Here & Now and named one of the best releases of 2018 in DownBeat Magazine.

Janiece Jaffe has recorded 11 albums and can be heard as a guest vocalist on more than 25 other recordings. During her career, Jaffe has written lyrics to the music of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Freddie Hubbard.
