![]() Every three years, more than 40 outstanding young harpists from around the world descend on Bloomington to compete in the USA International Harp Competition, with the 12th Competition taking place from June 29 through July 9, 2022. Moya Wright, Executive Director, will take a look “Behind the Scenes” and talk about some of the preparations for this year’s International Harp Competition. She will also talk about the volunteer program, including the popular Host Families program where local residents volunteer to host an international contestant. Founded in 1989 by Susann McDonald, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Harp at the Jacobs School of Music, the USA International Harp Competition is recognized as one of most prestigious, and lucrative, solo harp competitions in the world. Participants will be competing for the gold, silver, bronze medals and cash prizes before a jury of distinguished international judges. Harps will be coming too – truckloads of them! Lyon & Healy Harps will ship ten new magnificent harps from Chicago, and the Jacobs School of Music will provide twelve of their harps, plus 22 practice rooms. Some contestants drive here with their own harps, and some harps are even flown in by cargo planes from overseas! As we like to say, “there are more harps in Bloomington than there are in many small countries!”
Moya Wright, born in Zimbabwe, has performed and taught harp in the United States, Asia, Africa and Europe. She was formerly Principal Harpist of the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and has concertized in the US, Asia, Africa and Europe. She has many years’ experience in arts administration, including as Director of the Victor Salvi Foundation, and previously served as the Executive Director of the USA International Harp Competition for the 6th Competition in 2004. The event includes live harp music performed by an IU student. The Luncheon Buffet menu includes: Veggie Chili, Chicken Noddle Soup, Mixed Greens with Bacon Bits, Tofu, Broccoli, Diced Bell Peppers, Tomatoes, Green Onions, Parmesan Cheese, Croutons, Ranch Dressing & House Vinaigrette, Rolls & Butter, and NY Cheesecake.
