The Waldron Arts Center proudly presents four new shows in the galleries for May. In the Miller Gallery, Bert Gilbert presents Weather, Water, and Ash, a collection of sculptures exploring the themes composing the show’s title, specifically the way in which they are each harbinger’s of the ever-present state of change in nature. Gilbert’s goal in highlighting these changes, some consistent, and some more evident as climate change persists, is to celebrate an appreciation of our world as a way to motivate work towards its preservation. Gloria Manzanares and Emily Zarse have partnered to create Creative ReProductions: Conversations on Art and Mother, on view in the Treasury Gallery. The duo has found common interest and collaboration in their explorations of parenthood, and its influence on their own creativity. Their work stems from curiosity in both the philosophical questions of identity and social structures, while also focusing on the personal embodiments of the daily experience. The gallery plays host to works in each of their unique styles, featuring both sculpture and painting. The World of Doodles, showing in the Educational Gallery, exhibits works by Diego Manansala. His paintings, often large-scale and mesmerizing, pull viewers in, inviting them to lose themselves in the play of bright colors against stark black and white doodles. Manansala’s work is meant to be accessible and connecting for all viewers, and, though new to the visual arts world, his welcoming personality comes across in his artwork, achieving just that.
In the Spotlight Gallery, Jeff Grant’s show, Psychogeometry, fills the small space with color. Grant’s paintings reference modernity, the kind that ended before 1979. His work embodies the kind of random color and geometric design that allow viewers to appreciate the chaos. Each piece has an outsider-feel, often utilizing unlikely materials to achieve a bold, pop-like effect. These four new shows will open with a reception during Gallery Walk, May 3, from 5-8pm.
