This summer marks the 35th Anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park in Bloomington. To celebrate, Monroe County Civic Theater (MCCT), together with Bloomington Parks & Rec, invites the public to join us for free performances of The Comedy of Errors at Waldron, Hill and Buskirk Park May 30 – June 9. Every summer, beginning in 1989, MCCT has created opportunities for area residents to participate in live performances of Shakespeare’s works and for audiences to enjoy these performances free of charge in an open-air setting. MCCT is committed to helping keep Shakespeare’s work alive, accessible and meaningful to modern audiences. We believe that there’s something unique about opening the stage to anyone who wants to participate - veterans and new talent, old, young, and from all walks of life, that helps connect audiences to the rich characters, plots, and imagery. And providing an excuse for a lovely evening in the park doesn’t hurt. One of The Bard’s earliest works, The Comedy of Errors follows Antiphonus as he searches for his long-lost identical twin brother, also named Antiphonus, while his servant, Dromio, searches for his long lost identical twin brother, Dromio. When they arrive in Ephesus and begin just missing one another, shenanigans ensue -- and a continuous string of mistaken identities embroil everyone in their wake.
The production will be directed by Bloomington native Devin May, a 2018 graduate of the Indiana University Theatre School and winner of the 2018 grand prize in the National Society of Arts and Letters Bloomington chapter drama competition. Performances will begin Thursday, May 30 at 7 pm and run Friday through Sunday that week (May 31 – June 2) and the next (June 7 – June 9). Shows will begin at 7 pm, except on Sundays, with matinees beginning at 2 pm. Waldron, Hill and Buskirk park is located at 331 S Washington St, Bloomington. Monroe County Civic Theater is Bloomington, Indiana's only all-volunteer non-profit theater. We focus on celebrating all people, regardless of experience, who want to explore the theatrical arts. We welcome people of all ages, ethnicities, genders, and abilities and are proud to showcase the diversity and beauty that make Bloomington so great.
