Together with The Ryder Magazine and Film Series, the City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission will host a screening of The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 (2011) on Saturday, October 24, at 2 p.m. at Switchyard Park Pavilion (1601 South Rogers St.) The screening of the award-winning documentary on the Black Power Movement co-produced by actor Danny Glover and featuring Angela Davis and Harry Belafonte will be followed by the opportunity to participate in small group discussions of the film. As seating for the event will be limited due to physical distancing requirements, reservations are requested by Friday, October 16 at https://tinyurl.com/MLKBlackPowerMixtapeRSVP. After the screening, attendees will be invited to break into small groups to discuss issues raised in the film in the context of current local, national, and global events. Commission members will lead discussions about the historical movement with a view toward actions community members can take in the present day to challenge oppressive structures that perpetuate racism and other systemic injustice. Specifically, discussions will focus on local opportunities for civic engagement, community resources for marginalized families, education, youth engagement and development, and town and gown relationships with the goal of empowering participants to become agents of change.
