WHAT:  Wake Up! with United Way “Caring for our Children”

WHEN: Thursday, October 14, 2021; 8 - 9 a.m. (series takes place second Thursday of each month)

WHERE: Virtual Event via Zoom

WHO: Co-hosted by United Way and Indiana University's Political and Civic Engagement program. Guest speakers include Katie Broadfoot, Executive Director of Monroe County United Ministries; Jennifer Myers, Director of Monroe Smart Start; and Courtney Payne Taylor, Operations Director of Boys & Girls Clubs.

DESCRIPTION:  Monthly speaker series exploring the underlying issues contributing to poverty and economic insecurity while also bringing to light innovative solutions and how to support rebuilding a better normal.

Childcare underwent incredible changes during the pandemic. Providers had to adapt quickly to ensure the health and safety of the children and employees. And when schools closed to in-person instruction, many families struggled to find additional affordable childcare while they continued to work.

Join us on Thursday, October 14, at 8 a.m. for Wake Up! with United Way “Caring for Our Children.” A panel of childcare provider representatives will discuss how they faced these challenges, lessons learned during this time, and changes that will ensure preparedness and safety carrying forward.

Guest speakers include Katie Broadfoot, Executive Director of Monroe County United Ministries; Jennifer Myers, Director of Monroe Smart Start; and Courtney Payne Taylor, Operations Director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington.

Attendees can deepen their awareness about someone else’s reality while learning about the challenges, innovations, collaborations, resources available through area nonprofits, and how to get more involved in making a difference. Guests are invited to come with questions for the speakers or just listen and learn.

ABOUT THE SERIES: As the region rebuilds from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Wake Up! with United Way season focuses on Building a Better Normal. Each month’s discussion brings to light how we can all create a brighter future that works for everyone in our community, including topics like homelessness, food security, and workers’ rights.

Wake Up! with United Way is co-hosted by United Way of Monroe County and Indiana University's Political and Civic Engagement program, with support from presenting sponsors Bloomington Township, Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County, Duke Energy, IU Credit Union, and Old National Bank.

COST: This is a free event, but RSVP before the event via the Eventbrite link found at www.monroeunitedway.org/WakeUp.
