Bloomington Environmental Commission’s Tenth Annual Eco-Heroes Art Contest Open for Submissions

​The City of Bloomington’s Environmental Commission is announcing its annual Eco-Heroes Art Contest. The 10th annual art contest is calling on all amateur artists to submit art showcasing their creativity and appreciation of the natural environment. This year’s theme is “Fighting Fragmentation!,” which asks artists to learn about, and present artistic pieces related to the benefits connecting native habitats can have on wildlife and plant species alike. 
 
Habitat fragmentation is a major problem across the planet. It creates many difficulties for wildlife species by separating them from vital resources, such as food, water, and even shelter. Infrastructure such as roads, houses, and agriculture are prime examples of the causes of fragmentation.
 
The Eco-Heroes contest is open to City of Bloomington residents of all ages, from pre-kindergarten to adult. First-, second-, and third-place winners will be selected in the following categories: pre-k to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, 6th to 8th grade, 9th to 12th grade, and adult (18+). The contest also is open to all media, including 2D visual art (e.g. drawings, paintings, photographs), 3D visual art (e.g. sculptures, fiber, metal), digital media (e.g. graphic design, videos), performance art (e.g. songs, raps, sketches), and language art (e.g. essays, poems). Submissions that utilize recycled or reused material are highly encouraged.

Awards and prizes donated by local businesses will be presented to winners by Mayor John Hamilton during an awards ceremony at the Lion’s Den Shelter of Cascades Park on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. The Environmental Commission welcomes donations from local businesses, entrepreneurs, and citizens to help sponsor the event. 
 
All entries should be dropped off at the Department of Planning & Transportation at Showers City Hall (401 N. Morton St., Suite 130) by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2022.
