Ivy Tech Community College’s Bloomington campus is now offering a Medical Scribe Professional certification in Medical Assisting. The certificate can be earned in less than a year and credits count toward earning a full associate degree in medical assisting. Introductory classes begin as soon as March 23 and are offered in convenient online and evening formats.
Medical scribes are in-demand professionals who work directly with providers to document patient encounters, medical histories, and presenting problems. Day-to-day duties and flexibility of work environment are based on employer needs. “Graduates of the Medical Scribe Professional certificate program work in hospitals, medical offices, and long-term care facilities in and around Bloomington, with pay ranges up to $20 per hour,” Karlee Wyatt, Ivy Tech Bloomington Dean of Health Sciences said. “This certificate offers graduates more flexibility in working remote from home or in the office, as well as working hours.”

The City of Bloomington and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) have reached a contingent agreement on the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement (https://bton.in/EVCm1), which includes unprecedented investments in public safety. The new contract would govern salaries and benefits for FOP members for four years starting in 2023.
The contingent agreement continues and expands one-time investments made in 2022 funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and other federal supports, including 2023 salary increases of more than 13% for officers first class and more than 12.5% for senior police officers. The City and the Union agreed on a 60% increase to members’ annual longevity benefits and agreed to double officers’ longevity pay in their 20th year, from $2,500 to $5,000 annually. On January 1, 2023, an officer first class with one year of service at the Bloomington Police Department would see their salary increase by $6,694. A senior police officer with 20 years of service would see their salary increase by $9,189. Overall, over four years the contract would provide an increase of 23.3% in base pay for a total of $72,266 for officers first class and 22.8% in base pay for a total of $75,465 for senior police officers. The new contract would also memorialize the Juneteenth holiday and simplify how overtime pay is computed. The Mill, Bloomington’s center for entrepreneurship, announced today that Evansville-based startup Utiliz won first place in the Spring 2022 Crossroads Pitch Competition, held Saturday, March 5, at The Mill. CEO Jackson Bolek and his team will receive $10,000 in cash and a package of startup and business services.
“We’re absolutely thrilled,” Bolek said of the win, “and our team is excited to be developing software that will change how utilities look at their infrastructure. Utilities of all sizes need access to cutting-edge tools at a price point they can afford, and we believe that we’re equipped to deliver those tools later this spring.” Utiliz won by unanimous vote from the three finals judges: Alex Shortle, Partner at EO Advisors, the spotlight sponsor for the spring competition; Julie Heath, VP of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems at the IEDC; and Elise Young, Director of gBETA Bloomington-Columbus. Utiliz solves a critical problem for water utilities: how to know which pipes are most likely to fail next. Many utilities don’t have data, or useable data, to predict breakage. As a result, they’re forced to guess which pipes should be replaced next. In his winning pitch, Bolek explained that the age of a pipe is a poor predictor for breakage, but is nonetheless often used by utilities without access to better data. This highly inaccurate system of risk assessment results in huge expense for the utility and its consumers: unnecessary replacement of sound pipes, and emergency response to failed pipes. Ada and the Engine by Lauren Gunderson | March 31 – April 16 at the Waldron Auditorium This spring, Cardinal Stage is thrilled to be remounting its previously postponed production of Ada and the Engine, originally scheduled for March of 2020. This contemporary drama, written by America’s most produced living playwright, Lauren Gunderson, follows the life and work of Ada Byron Lovelace, a 19th century mathematician, who is now widely recognized as the first computer programmer. The play, directed by Cardinal Stage’s Artistic Director Kate Galvin, runs from March 31 – April 16 at the Waldron Auditorium.
Discover the groundbreaking woman of science whose work has impacted all of our lives in profound ways. Ada and the Engine tells the inspiring and fascinating story of the brilliant female mathematician, Ada Byron Lovelace (daughter of the flamboyant and notorious poet Lord Byron). At the dawn of the British Industrial Revolution, young Lovelace sees the boundless creative potential in the “analytical engine” the first mechanical computer, designed by renowned mathematician Charles Babbage. Lovelace envisions a whole new world, beyond what Babbage had conceived, where art and information converge. Together they dream of the future and struggle to navigate the treacherous waters of friendship, legacy, and ambition. The City of Bloomington and its Mayor John Hamilton have proclaimed March 14 as Hand Sanitizer Day, honoring the day that Cardinal Spirits craft distillery began producing and distributing hand sanitizer amid a national shortage in 2020. Cardinal Spirits, the craft distillery founded in 2015 in Bloomington, Ind., is known for producing award-winning spirits and canned cocktails, but it temporarily shifted its entire production to hand sanitizer when the pandemic began. The distillery donated much of its hand sanitizer to first responders and emergency organizations, and gave away hand sanitizer free of charge to individuals in the community every day, too. To show appreciation for the City of Bloomington’s proclamation, Cardinal Spirits will celebrate Hand Sanitizer Day by once again giving away an unlimited amount of its hand sanitizer to the community: free gallons for individuals, and free bulk orders (10+ gallons) for organizations, businesses, and groups, from March 14-31, 2022. Hand sanitizer must be picked up at Cardinal Spirits, 922 S. Morton St. in Bloomington. Shipping is not available. Pre-orders for both individual gallons and bulk orders can be made at cardinalspirits.com starting March 13.
