The 10th annual art contest is calling on all amateur artists to submit art showcasing their creativity and appreciation of the natural environment. This year’s theme is “Fighting Fragmentation!,” which asks artists to learn about, and present artistic pieces related to the benefits connecting native habitats can have on wildlife and plant species alike.
Habitat fragmentation is a major problem across the planet. It creates many difficulties for wildlife species by separating them from vital resources, such as food, water, and even shelter. Infrastructure such as roads, houses, and agriculture are prime examples of the causes of fragmentation. The Eco-Heroes contest is open to City of Bloomington residents of all ages, from pre-kindergarten to adult. First-, second-, and third-place winners will be selected in the following categories: pre-k to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, 6th to 8th grade, 9th to 12th grade, and adult (18+). The contest also is open to all media, including 2D visual art (e.g. drawings, paintings, photographs), 3D visual art (e.g. sculptures, fiber, metal), digital media (e.g. graphic design, videos), performance art (e.g. songs, raps, sketches), and language art (e.g. essays, poems). Submissions that utilize recycled or reused material are highly encouraged. As part of their ongoing efforts to increase the financial stability of residents in Monroe, Greene, and Owen counties, United Way of Monroe County is partnering with German American Bank to expand their Financial Coaching program. Now in its fourth year, the Financial Coaching program has proven effective at increasing the financial security of participating households year after year. In light of the program’s success, German American Bank is sponsoring another cohort of participants with a commitment of $10,000 in program funding for 2022.
The Financial Coaching program pairs individuals with a professional financial coach from Apprisen, a non-profit organization with over 65 years of experience helping people improve their financial well-being. Over the course of twelve months, participants receive instruction in budgeting, debt management, and more — all tailored to their personal financial situation and goals. Since United Way and German American Bank first partnered in 2018, the Financial Coaching program has helped participants save a total of $124,946 by paying off debt and increasing personal savings. On average, participants pay off $2,629 in debt and save over $2,000, all while increasing their financial confidence. These savings have allowed participants to weather medical bills, improve their credit score, qualify for a mortgage, make costly home repairs, and in some cases, avoid eviction. The City of Bloomington’s Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, in partnership with EarthKeepers, is providing support for restaurants and retail food establishments to reduce and divert food waste from the landfill through the newly created Compost Up Downtown program.
The new program supports a priority identified in the City’s Climate Action Plan (Strategy WM1-A, https://bton.in/ZC2Y5) to increase the community’s organic material diversion by 40%. Compost Up Downtown is funded through Mayor John Hamilton’s Recover Forward initiative to help Bloomington recover from the pandemic and advance racial, economic, and climate justice. The Compost Up Downtown program will offer a three-month composting trial period with EarthKeepers for 16 eligible restaurants and retail food establishments between April 2022 and May 2023. During the trial period, valued at $5,000, participating food service businesses will receive a waste audit, assistance setting up compost collections, and three months of compost collection services. The program aims to reduce technical and financial barriers to integrating composting practices in restaurant operations. |
