Today the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane), in collaboration with The Mill, Dioltas and the Defense Entrepreneurs Forum (DEF) announced the launch of the PROPELS Accelerator. PROPELS offers teams of academics, entrepreneurs and small businesses an exciting opportunity to commercialize patented government technology. “Scientists at NSWC Crane have invented some amazing technology, and while it’s great for the Navy, we believe that there are other use opportunities that can be explored,” explained Jenna Dix, Director of Technology Transfer at NSWC Crane. “We’re excited to see what kind of commercial applications can come from government-created tech.” The new program will kick off with a Tech Expo at the Mill on April 14. NSWC Crane scientists will present the tech–what it is and how it’s being used by the Navy. Some examples of government-invented technology that will be showcased include: long-range heat detection, machine learning for “cleaning” data, assistive devices for low-light emergency response, and drone tracking technology.

Organizations in negotiation with the City of Bloomington to assume management of the John Waldron Arts Center as the merged entity and plan to complete a renovation of the downtown venue in the summer and fall of 2022
The Bloomington Playwrights Project (BPP), Cardinal Stage, and Pigasus Institute are joining forces! These Bloomington cultural institutions are thrilled to announce their plans for a three-way merger on July 1, 2022 that will create a full-scale, comprehensive performing arts organization, and one of the largest arts organizations in Southern Indiana. The new organization will carry on the important missions of the founding organizations, while expanding its operations and programming, increasing its service capacity, and delivering quality theater and film to a larger and more diverse audience. Additionally, the three founding organizations are in the final stages of negotiation with the City of Bloomington to assume management of the John Waldron Arts Center, which will serve as the home for administrative operations of the new organization, in July. Once secured, the new organization will perform a substantial update to the building including new seating, box office, lobby bar/concessions, theatrical lighting, and more. This update, combined with the City’s recent completion of deferred maintenance, would make for an investment of well over $1 million in the building. The new organization will also continue to manage the Ted Jones Playhouse, the current home of the BPP, on 9th St, and the Pigasus Institute’s film studio (home of the Bloomington Academy of Film and Theatre) on 7th St. All spaces will be programmed with the community in mind, with ample opportunity for rental to community groups and emerging artists throughout the year, and a steadfast commitment to programming for the visual arts. More details regarding the scope and timeline of the renovations and the subsequent operations of the Waldron Arts Center will be unveiled at a later date. Ivy Tech Bloomington Workforce will be offering a CompTIA A+ training course Mondays and Wednesdays, March 21-May 27 at the Ivy Tech Bloomington Campus, from 5:30-7:00 PM. The City of Bloomington will celebrate the reopening of the John Waldron Arts Center on Friday, March 4 from 5-8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public*.
The celebration will mark the opening of two exhibitions in the Waldron’s Visual Arts Galleries, Reclamation, featuring work by members of Bloomington Open Studios Tours and the Bloomington Photography Club, both long-standing groups who have historically shown work at the Waldron, and Transformation featuring new work by local emerging artists Joii Cooper and Larissa Danielle. Bloomington-based folk-rock band The Barn Cats will also perform in the Waldron Galleries at 5 p.m. Cardinal Stage’s newly commissioned play The Mountaintop will also be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Waldron Auditorium. The Mountaintop is scheduled to run from Thursday, March 3 through Sunday, March 20. The show marks the first performance to take place in the Waldron since its closure in December 2020.
