This month, WFIU will launch Inner States, a new weekly, hour-long arts and culture magazine. The series will air Sundays at noon on WFIU, beginning January 9, and will also be available as a podcast. Inner States features conversations with artists, thinkers, and doers from Southern Indiana and beyond about where they’re coming from and where they’re going. Through long-form interviews and sound-rich features, Inner States digs into the art, culture, stories, and sounds of the southern Midwest, from the rolling hills to reddit, from comedians to country dances, getting to know the people, the ideas, and the landscapes that make us who we are. Inner States explores big ideas, gets caught up in stories, and slows down for sounds. Inner States is hosted by writer and cultural studies scholar Alex Chambers. Chambers is the co-creator of How to Survive the Future, a podcast about today from the perspective of tomorrow. He produced the Hoosier Young Farmer Podcast and is a former associate producer on WFIU’s Earth Eats with Kayte Young. The 28th Annual Soup Bowl Benefit for Hoosier Hills Food Bank is back! This year’s event, scheduled for Sunday, February 20, 2022, will be a hybrid event, as we move back to a more normal, in-person event. Due to safety concerns with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event will return as a safety-positive, in-person event at approximately 50% attendance at the Monroe Convention Center. In addition to the limited 300 in-person tickets being sold this year, the Soup Bowl Benefit will be livestreamed on the Mandolin platform to viewers all over the world (with a 48-hour replay). Hand-made bowls by local potters will be provided to the in-person attendees at the event and will be available for pick up by livestream ticket holders in advance at the Monroe Convention Center. The program will be hosted this year by “Brother William” Morris (host of WFIU’s Soul Kitchen) and will feature great live music as in past years.
In-person and virtual ticket prices are as listed below, and both are available for purchase through the Soup Bowl Ticket link at www.hhfoodbank.org. The event will occur from 5pm to approximately 7pm on Sunday, February 20.
The Monroe County History Center will have a new exhibit, "Pioneer Quilts from Hoosier Country," from January 25th to March 26th. A quilt’s patterns and stitches can reveal a lot about a family’s history and throughout central Indiana they were passed down from one generation to the next. Handcrafted with patience and love, the History Center is fortunate to have examples in our permanent collection. Some of the heirlooms on display in the Hill Gallery date back to the nineteenth century. Visit the Monroe County History Center at 202 E 6th Street and see some of the most cherished pieces from Monroe County history.
The exhibit is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. **** The annual Garage Sale fundraiser will also begin collecting donations for the June 2022 sale beginning January 12. For more information on the warehouse location and donations, visit monroehistory.org/annual-garage-sale/. |
