Unfortunately, all this cooking leads to a related peak in cooking fires, says Ryan Wolfe of SERVPRO of Lawrence, Owen, Greene & Martin Cos.. Cooking fires are responsible for nearly half (49%) of all home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). "To help keep your holidays from, literally, going up in smoke, it's critical to know and use safe cooking practices," says Wolfe.
According to the NFPA, Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average for such incidents. The NFPA urges home cooks to take some basic safety steps to help prevent cooking fires.

Earlier this year, the WFIU/WTIU News team received a $15,000 grant from the Poynter Institute and the Omidyar Network to investigate the influence private equity has had on local news. In recent years, newspapers in south-central Indiana have seen steep circulation and staffing declines since being purchased by companies with strong private equity ties.
With the help of the grant, the WFIU/WTIU News team launched an investigative reporting project called Paper Cuts to track the power of media conglomerates and private firms over Indiana papers and document the limited coverage of local matters that remains. After months of research, WFIU/WTIU News will present its findings from the Paper Cuts reporting project during a live Noon Edition broadcast. The event takes place on Friday, November 17 at the Monroe County History Center and is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with the live broadcast beginning at 12 p.m. As part of the City’s continuing efforts to expand micro-mobility transportation options in Bloomington, the Department of Economic and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce a new pilot program to provide residents with vouchers to purchase electric bikes at local Bloomington bike shops.
The e-bike voucher program will function as an incentive for residents to register for the City’s Go Bloomington and Zero In Bloomington platforms, and will support both the City’s Climate Action Plan and Transportation Demand Management Plan. Increasing the number of residents with access to e-bike’s helps support the City’s goal to reduce resident reliance on single occupancy vehicles in the community, as we strive to decrease on-road vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by 8% of 2018 values (Climate Action Plan, Goal TL1). The Mill, Bloomington’s nonprofit center for entrepreneurship, announced that applications for the 2023 Crossroads Idea Competition are now open. The competition is open to Indiana-based founders who have innovative ideas for startup businesses. The winner will receive a $2,500 investment from Flywheel Fund. In addition, The Mill is offering a second stand-alone prize of $1,000 cash, sponsored by Duke Energy Foundation, for ideas that solve an environmental problem by addressing conservation, climate change, natural disaster preparedness, or other issues of climate resiliency.
“The Crossroads Idea Competition fuels the earliest stage of innovation,” said Bram Boyd, Program Manager for Crossroads. “We want to encourage Indiana innovators to take action on their ideas and explore building a company. With feedback from judges and a little cash, they can take the next step. We’re especially excited to see new environmental solutions in this year’s competition.” This is the fourth year for the Crossroads Idea Competition. Applicants submit a three-minute video describing the problem they’re solving, their target customer, their solution, and their plan to create revenue. A team of independent judges from around the state, with expertise in entrepreneurship and business, will review all the applications in mid-December. The finalists will pitch their ideas, Shark Tank–style, via Zoom on December 20.
