CDFI Friendly Bloomington (CFB), a financial services nonprofit supporting the Uplands region, has named a new Executive Director. John Zody, the former Director of Housing & Neighborhood Development for the City of Bloomington, began the role on January 16, 2024. Jane Kupersmith, who led the organization previously, has returned to the City of Bloomington to lead the Economic & Sustainable Development Department. CDFI Friendly Bloomington was established as a public-private partnership in 2019 to attract funding from the $250 billion Community Development Financial Institution industry to the local marketplace. Community development financial institutions, or CDFIs, are specialized organizations that provide financial services in low-income communities and to people or organizations that lack access to financing. CDFI Friendly Bloomington provides technical assistance for organizations that seek nontraditional financing opportunities and works to connect potential borrowers with CDFI funders. While a formal merger agreement has been executed, the transaction is still subject to approval from regulators and members of both credit unions. Centra, a Columbus-based credit union with roughly $2.06 billion in assets, would merge with Hoosier Hills, a Bedford-based credit union with approximately $880 million in assets. The unified credit union will retain the Centra Credit Union name and is expected to have just over $3 billion in assets by the time the merger is complete. Centra President and CEO, Rick Silvers, will remain President and CEO of the combined Centra Credit Union.
“This partnership presents a tremendous opportunity for the members of both credit unions. The lack of redundancy in this partnership means all service centers of both credit unions will remain open and all team members will have a role in the unified organization. Together, the larger organization will be more nimble, proactive, and better able to introduce products and technological advances to meet members’ needs in an ever-changing market with greater impact than either could individually. We can essentially choose the best aspects of each credit union to build a stronger and more agile unified credit union,” Centra President and CEO Rick Silvers said.
