We’re so grateful to the Monroe County community for rounding up your spare change for the Friends of the Library when you shopped at Bloomingfoods Co-op Market in November! Your generosity totaled just over $8,400, money which will support our programs, collections, and more. And a huge thank you to Bloomingfoods for making it possible by including the Friends in their wonderful Positive Change program. Become a Friend of the Library today.
The City of Bloomington has been recognized by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance as a 2023 Digital Inclusion Trailblazer. First launched in 2016, Digital Inclusion Trailblazers is a public inventory of local government initiatives promoting digital literacy and broadband access for underserved residents. The City was commended for its continuing efforts to bridge the digital divide, including conducting a scientific survey on broadband equity, developing a Digital Equity (DE) Strategic Plan, establishing a DE Grants Fund for nonprofit organizations, DE staffing, and efforts to make high speed broadband more available and affordable.
“The City is committed to creating digital equity by making digital access available to all in our community.” said Mayor John Hamilton. “I am proud of the strides our community has made towards this goal, and I appreciate the recognition.” This year, Bloomington joins a record number of Digital Inclusion Trailblazers, with 47 total awardees representing municipal, county, and regional governments paving the way for digitally inclusive communities across the US. The City’s Department of Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) will host five sessions of Homebuyers Club in 2024. Open to prospective homeowners across the community, the classes are targeted to first-time home buyers with income at or below 80 percent of area median income (AMI), with the goal of increasing accessibility to home ownership. Income-qualified residents who complete a Homebuyers Club and are purchasing a home within the city limits may qualify for assistance with downpayment and closing costs from HAND.
“Now, more than ever, purchasing a home is out of reach for many Bloomington residents,” said Mayor John Hamilton. “The HAND Homebuyer Club, as well as the down payment and closing cost assistance program, are some of the many ways that the City helps to make housing affordable. I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about how they can make homeownership a reality.” We are so excited to celebrate our 10th Annual Casino Night!!
