Financial aid professionals will be volunteering at Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington for College Goal Sunday on Feb. 26 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. College Goal Sunday is free and assists college-bound students and families apply for financial aid by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
“We want to eliminate barriers in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and help students access available financial aid to help pay for college,” said Patt McCafferty, Ivy Tech Bloomington Director of Financial Aid. The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships, and federal student loans at most colleges, universities, and vocational/technical schools nationwide. The state deadline for filing the FAFSA is April 15 in order to be eligible for most Indiana financial aid.

Two new programs from WTIU Public Television will honor the life and music of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery in time for the centennial of Montgomery’s birth. On Sunday, February 26, WTIU will premiere Wes Bound: The Genius of Wes Montgomery at 8 p.m. and Wes Montgomery at 100: A 100th Birthday Tribute Concert at 9:30 p.m. Two-time Grammy winner John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery was born in Indianapolis on March 6, 1923 and rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time. His story is told through the eyes of his youngest child, Robert Montgomery, in Wes Bound: The Genius of Wes Montgomery. Ivy Tech Community College is accepting applications for Girls Write, a new creative writing program that starts March 20. Girls Write is an inclusive program designed to foster a love of reading, writing, and sharing at no cost. Girls and gender non-conforming writers with diverse experiences in grades five through nine are encouraged to apply. Applications close March 10.
“Girls Write will provide a free, supportive, and empowering environment for young girls to explore their writing, meet other writers, and form a community,” said Dr. Emily Bobo, Girls Write Director and Ivy Tech Bloomington Professor of English. “There are many reasons why a girl might not write; I want to remove money and gender from that list of potential reasons.” Girls Write will meet four times at Ivy Tech Bloomington on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the following dates: March 20, April 3, April 17, and May 1. WFIU Public Radio will host a live broadcast of Noon Edition on Friday, February 24 from the Shreve Auditorium at the Indiana University Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with the live broadcast beginning at 12 p.m. The program will mark the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Noon Edition host Bob Zaltsberg and a panel of experts will discuss the year since the invasion, the ramifications on Ukrainians at home and abroad, the world’s response, and what it means for the region in the long run. Panelists will include Dafna Rachok, a PhD student in sociocultural anthropology at IU currently living in Ukraine; Sarah Phillips, a professor of anthropology at IU who specializes in the former Soviet Union; and Iryna Voloshyna, a PhD student in folklore at IU whose research is in Ukrainian and Eastern European culture. United Way of Monroe County, along with community partners, is pleased to announce the 2023 Free Community Tax Service is open for the upcoming tax season. IRS-certified volunteers are ready to serve clients at nine in-person sites in Brown, Monroe, and Owen counties. Hoosiers making less than $60,000 annually can receive help filing their federal and state tax returns for free.
Tax preparation is provided free of charge and volunteers work one-on-one with community members to ensure they receive 100% of their refund, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) if eligible. Additionally, area residents with a combined Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $72,000 or less can file online for free from the comfort of their homes or anywhere with an internet connection. The Mill today announced that it has hired John Fernandez to lead the development and marketing of the Trades District. The former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, Fernandez also served as mayor of Bloomington from 1995 to 2003. As senior vice president for innovation and strategic partnerships at The Mill, Fernandez’s first priority will be overseeing the construction and launch of the new Technology Center.

Nextlaw Ventures completed its first successful exit in 2019. Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington and Bloomington High School North have partnered to give students the chance to start college early by earning the Indiana College Core (ICC) in high school. The ICC is a 30 credit hour general education core of college credit guaranteed to transfer between Indiana public colleges and universities.
“The Indiana College Core is an excellent opportunity for students to get a jump start on their future,” said Matthew Stark, Bloomington High School North Principal. “The ICC also allows students to expand their major or complete college at a reduced cost. We are excited to be a partner in this endeavor.” Students take high school and Ivy Tech classes at the same time through dual credit or dual enrollment. Completing the core provides students the chance to Start As a Sophomore at Ivy Tech or other public colleges, having already completed the first year of college credits. The Bloomington Urban Enterprise Association is accepting applications for its Anti-Racism/DEI (Diversity, Equality & Inclusion) Business Scholarship. Three scholarships are available for the Winter/Spring cycle at a maximum of $1000 for individual Zone businesses who wish to self-assess and improve business practices relating to anti-racism or diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, max grant amounts that partner with other zone businesses or nonprofits for their training will increase to $1,250 for each Zone business. So, for example, if three Zone businesses train together, they would be eligible for a max funding amount of $3,750. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2023.
