City of Bloomington Hopewell Project Update

7/14/2022

The City of Bloomington will be taking ownership of a portion of the Hopewell site (the former IU Health Bloomington campus) this month. Residents in the area will notice an increase in activity as our contractors work to prepare the area for redevelopment. That work will include the demolition of several buildings in the area as identified in the Hospital Site Redevelopment Master Plan. Learn more about the plan at hopewellbloomington.org. You’ll find a map of the areas impacted below.

Here’s what to expect:
Beginning as early as late July, demolition of existing building structures to make way for the development of Hopewell Phase I East will commence.
Demolition details include:
  • Work hours will comply with the City’s noise ordinance Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-10 p.m., no holidays. The operation of pile drivers, steam shovels, pneumatic hammers, and steam or diesel gasoline hoists are limited to 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • No explosives will be utilized. Demolition will be completed using traditional tracked excavators that will disassemble the buildings and place debris on trucks for removal.
  • Dust will be mitigated with water. The water will be absorbed into demolition materials and lower levels into low areas and will follow normal drainage. Stormwater management and erosion control requirements capture and filter the water prior to leaving the site.
  • Erosion control for water management is coordinated with City of Bloomington Utilities, and the City will conduct routine inspections to ensure proper erosion control measures.
  • Traffic of demolition equipment and trucks is anticipated to use West 2nd St to I-69.
  • Tree removal will take place during demolition activities for future infrastructure improvements.
  • The future infrastructure projects include street trees, a tree grove, and a bioretention wetland garden.
  • The area will receive ongoing security monitoring.
