On the State Senate side, incumbent Democrat Shelli Yoder is running unopposed for District 40. Similarly, incumbent Republican Eric Koch is running unopposed for District 44. House District 46 will see Kurtis Cummings (D) challenge incumbent Bob Heaton (R). In House District 60, Michelle Higgs will take on incumbent Peggy Mayfield (R). Incumbent Democrat Matt Pierce is running unopposed for House District 61. Finally, House District 62 will feature a contest between Democrat Thomas Horrocks and incumbent Republican Dave Hall. |
Indiana State Senate District 40
Candidate: Shelli Yoder (D) (i)
Elected in 2020, Senator Shelli Yoder serves all residents of District 40, which encompasses Monroe County. In 2023, Senator Yoder was elected to serve as Assistant Minority Leader by members of her Senate Democratic Caucus. She is a senior lecturer at Indiana University Kelley School of Business and is honored to have represented her district on the Monroe County Council from 2013 to 2019. Senator Yoder served multiple years on the board of the South Central Community Action Program, including the Head Start Policy Council, and the Monroe County Opioid Commission. In 2017, she co-founded and co-chaired the statewide-award-winning South Central Indiana Opioid Summit. She has an extensive background in managing non-profit organizations focused on women’s health care. She lives in Bloomington with her spouse and three children.

Indiana State Senate District 44
Candidate: Eric Koch (R) (i)
State Sen. Eric Koch has served Senate District 44 since 2016. The district includes Brown, Jackson, Lawrence and Orange counties and a portion of Monroe County. Before his election to the Indiana State Senate, Koch served District 65 in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2002-2016. Professionally, Koch is an attorney with The Koch Law Firm P.C. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Mike Pence and a Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Ernie Fletcher. Koch and his wife, Connie, have three adult sons and live in Bedford.
Indiana State Representative District 46
Candidate: Kurtis J. Cummings (D)
Kurtis Cummings owns Switchyard Brewing Company in Bloomington, Indiana. Having previously served as a medic, Kurtis has always been driven by a commitment to take care of others. Kurtis is focused on bringing fresh perspectives and resilient leadership to tackle tough challenges facing District 46 and the State of Indiana and is dedicated to building a future where District 46 thrives on the principles of equity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

Candidate: Bob Heaton (R) (i)
State Rep. Bob Heaton was born in 1956 in Clay County, Indiana. He grew up on a classic Hoosier farm that has been in the Heaton family for over 120 years. Heaton attended Clay City High School where he was a star player of the Clay City Eels basketball team. After high school, Heaton attended the University of Denver on a full athletic scholarship before transferring to Indiana State University where he played alongside Larry Bird in ISU's famous 1978-79 season, where they played for their only NCAA Division I Championship.
After graduating from ISU with a bachelor's degree in business administration, he served as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual. Since 2003, Heaton has been president of his own financial service venture, Heaton Financial Services, in Terre Haute.
Heaton was first elected in 2010 and serves as the Majority Whip in the State House of Representatives.
Heaton and his wife, Jane Ann, have one child and five grandchildren and has called the Wabash Valley home his entire life.

Indiana State Representative District 60
Candidate: Michelle Higgs (D)
Michelle (Burkes) Higgs is a community leader, wife, mom of three, and a Martinsville High School alumna. Since high school, Michelle has distinguished herself as a leader at church, at work, and in her community. A tri-captain of the Martinsville High School swim team, she studied internationally in Canada and England. She spent time working at Arthur Anderson (a "Big Five" accounting firm) where she supported policies to protect and support pregnant women and nursing mothers in the workplace. An entrepreneur, she helped to co-found Coupons.com in 1994.
Motivated by her deep faith, she strives to build a community that honors the sacredness of all. Rooted in Hoosier hospitality, Michelle decided to run to represent the people of House District 60 to make it a place where our air, soil, and water are clean, where we can get the healthcare we need when we need it, and where our families can afford to keep the lights on and their homes heated.

State Rep. Peggy Mayfield was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2012 where she serves on a number of committees. Mayfield has earned awards for her work on bills in areas of education, economic development, veterans' issues, law enforcement, and protection of the unborn.
Peggy and her husband Dean have four sons and live in Martinsville, Indiana where they are members of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. The Mayfields have owned and operated Mayfield Insurance in Mooresville for over two decades. Peggy serves on the Executive Board of the Hoosier Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, is a member of the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow, and a recipient of the Boy Scouts District Award of Merit. Peggy is a state skeet shooting champion and NRA certified rifle and shotgun instructor as well as a certified skydiver and scuba diver.

Indiana State Representative District 61
Candidate: Matt Pierce (D) (i)
Rep. Pierce received a bachelor's in telecommunications and political science from Indiana University in 1984. In 1987, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Law at Bloomington and has since been admitted to practice law in multiple states and the District of Columbia. Pierce was an intern for the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Consumer Protection and Finance, and served as a legal clerk for the National Association of Broadcasters.
Rep. Pierce began working for the Indiana General Assembly in 1988 and working as a legislative assistant, research and policy analyst, and attorney. He served as the principal clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1996-1998. He first became involved in local government as a watchdog on the Bloomington Telecommunications Council. In 1995, he was elected to the Bloomington City Council, representing the Third District. From 1999 through 2001, Pierce served as Chief of Staff for former Congressman Baron Hill. He was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2002.

Indiana State Representative District 62
Candidate: Dave Hall (R) (i)
Dave was born and raised in Southern Indiana. A 2001 graduate of Brownstown Central High School, Dave is a 20 year small business owner of Dave Hall Crop Insurance and also farms 500 acres of corn and soybeans with his dad. Dave and his wife Bradie were married in 2006 and built their home on her family farm in Jackson County. They are parents to three daughters: twins Hayden and Sydney and Gabby. The Hall Family are active members of Restoration Church of the Nazarene in Bedford.

Candidate: Thomas Horrocks (D)
Thomas has been a church pastor in Southern Indiana for nearly 8 years. Thomas is a chaplain in the Indiana Army National Guard where he has been serving for nearly 10 years, including one overseas deployment and more than a year on full-time orders serving in Indiana during the Guard's COVID response mission.
Thomas went into ministry because he wanted to play a part in helping people live meaningful, fulfilling lives. He believes everyone should have the opportunity to thrive as individuals, in their relationships, and in their families. That's the same reason that Thomas is now running to represent District 62 in the Statehouse.
