Three Democratic candidates competed to be their party's nominee for Mayor of Bloomington in the upcoming general election on November 7th, 2023. The primary, held on May 2nd, 2023, saw Kerry Thomson win the nomination. She advances on to the general election where she is running unopposed. According to Indiana Code Title 36, the mayor is considered the city executive and has the power to set the city's annual budget, approve or deny city ordinances, and fill vacancies for city boards and commissions among many other functions. Mayors are elected for four-year terms with no limits. |
Kerry Thomson (D)
Kerry Thomson is the executive director of the IU Center for Rural Engagement. Throughout her career in executive leadership, Kerry has both managed and transformed large organizations with complex projects, dozens of stakeholders, and multi-million dollar budgets. She served as the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County from 1997 to 2017. Thomson earned a B.A. in sociology, anthropology and women’s studies from Randolph-Macon College. She has also served on numerous boards in Bloomington's community, such as the Indiana University Credit Union and Tithe Advisory Board.
