2026 is not an election year for Senate Districts 40 held by Shelli Yoder, and 44 held by Eric Koch, who will end their terms in 2028. House District 46 will see Jimmy Pittsford (D) challenge incumbent Bob Heaton (R). In House District 60, Democrat Carrie Syczylo (championed by previous candidate Michelle Higgs) will take on incumbent Peggy Mayfield (R). Incumbent Democrat Matt Pierce is being primaried by Lilliana Young for House District 61. Finally, House District 62 will feature a contest between Democrat Amy Oliver and incumbent Republican Dave Hall. |
Indiana State House Primary Election: May 5th, 2026
Indiana State Representative District 61
Primary Candidate: Matt Pierce (D) (i)
State Rep. Pierce received a bachelor's in telecommunications and political science from Indiana University in 1984. In 1987, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Law at Bloomington and has since been admitted to practice law in multiple states and the District of Columbia. Pierce was an intern for the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Consumer Protection and Finance, and served as a legal clerk for the National Association of Broadcasters.
Rep. Pierce began working for the Indiana General Assembly in 1988 and working as a legislative assistant, research and policy analyst, and attorney. He served as the principal clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1996-1998. He first became involved in local government as a watchdog on the Bloomington Telecommunications Council. In 1995, he was elected to the Bloomington City Council, representing the Third District. From 1999 through 2001, Pierce served as Chief of Staff for former Congressman Baron Hill. He was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2002.

Primary Candidate: Lilliana Young (D)
Lilliana Young is a decade long resident of Bloomington. She is a mom, a wife, and a lifelong service worker. She is an out and proud trans woman and is a leader in Bloomington’s LGBTQ community and founded The Sisterhood. Her and other organizers were responsible for Bloomington Resolution 2024-14, the Safe Haven Resolution for Gender Affirming Care. She serves on the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Comision. Young is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Candidate: Bob Heaton (R) (i)
State Rep. Bob Heaton was born in 1956 in Clay County, Indiana. He grew up on a classic Hoosier farm that has been in the Heaton family for over 120 years. Heaton attended Clay City High School where he was a star player of the Clay City Eels basketball team. After high school, Heaton attended the University of Denver on a full athletic scholarship before transferring to Indiana State University where he played alongside Larry Bird in ISU's famous 1978-79 season, where they played for their only NCAA Division I Championship.
After graduating from ISU with a bachelor's degree in business administration, he served as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual. Since 2003, Heaton has been president of his own financial service venture, Heaton Financial Services, in Terre Haute. Heaton was first elected in 2010 and serves as the Majority Whip in the State House of Representatives. Heaton and his wife, Jane Ann, have one child and five grandchildren and has called the Wabash Valley home his entire life.

Candidate: Carrie Syczylo (D)
Carrie Syczylo is a wife, mother of two daughters, small business owner, and community advocate. A Shelbyville native, she and her husband Michael built their life in rural Morgan County, where they raised their family and deepened their commitment to their community. Syczylo is the co-owner of Indiana Farm House Brew Coffee Co., a local coffee shop founded in Monrovia in 2018 and recently expanded to Cloverdale. Through her work and community involvement, she focuses on strengthening rural communities and supporting the people and businesses that make them thrive. Syczylo is a member of the Indiana Rural Summit coalition, running to be a voice for Hoosiers and to promote policy that covers issues such as getting rural residents access to essential services, protecting quality of life, and responsible development.

Candidate: Peggy Mayfield (R) (i)
State Rep. Peggy Mayfield was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2012 where she serves on a number of committees. Mayfield has earned awards for her work on bills in areas of education, economic development, veterans' issues, law enforcement, and protection of the unborn.
Rep. Mayfield and her husband Dean have four sons and live in Martinsville, Indiana where they are members of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. The Mayfields have owned and operated Mayfield Insurance in Mooresville for over two decades. She serves on the Executive Board of the Hoosier Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, is a member of the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow, and a recipient of the Boy Scouts District Award of Merit. Indiana State Representative District 62
Candidate: Dave Hall (R) (i)
State Rep. Dave Hall was born and raised in Southern Indiana. A 2001 graduate of Brownstown Central High School, Dave is a 20-year small business owner of Dave Hall Crop Insurance and also farms 500 acres of corn and soybeans with his dad. Hall is a member of the Jackson County REMC Board of Directors and serves as a special deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. He is a past president of the Jackson County Council and has served on the Jackson County Redevelopment Commission and Jackson County Industrial Development Corporation. He has also served on the Owen Township Advisory Board, Emergency Management Board and Ambulance Board. Hall and his wife Bradie were married in 2006 and built their home on her family farm in Jackson County. They are parents to three daughters: twins Hayden and Sydney and Gabby. The Hall Family are active members of Restoration Church of the Nazarene in Bedford.

Candidate: Amy Huffman Oliver(D)
Amy Huffman Oliver has devoted her personal and professional life to public service. Oliver is an experienced family law attorney and mediator, prosecutor, public school teacher, and writer. She graduated from Smith College and the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington. She is a lifelong Hoosier and grew up in Columbus, Indiana and now lives in a log cabin in Brown County with her husband, Jim. They have both been community leaders for the past 28 years. She is currently serving her second term as an elected member of the Brown Conty Schools school board and advocates for the interests of Sothern Indiana Hoosiers and especially small, rural schools and for fully funding public schools at the Indiana Statehouse.
