Monroe County Sheriff Candidates 
General Election: November 8th, 2022

This page provides information about candidates running for Monroe County Sheriff on General Election Day, November 8th. This open seat is currently being held by Sheriff Brad Swain. State law prohibits Sheriff Swain for running for a 3rd 4-year term. In the primary election, five Democratic candidates competed for their party's nomination.   

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has law enforcement jurisdiction over all unincorporated portions of the county.  With the Sheriff's Office there is the Chief Deputy, Captain of Operations, Office Administer, Animal Control, Civil Process Service, Coroner, Detective Division, non emergency Dispatch, Evidence Division. Jail, and Protective Orders.

Watch the League of Women Voter (LWV) candidate forum from Wednesday, October 12th on CATS! Both candidates from the circuit judge's race and the Democratic candidate from the sheriff's race answered questions prepared by the Bloomington-Monroe County chapter as well as the public. They shared their positions on policy topics and their plans if re-elected to office.

Winner: Ruben Marté (D)

Ruben Marté is a 31-year veteran with the Indiana State Police and currently serves as a Captain in the Office of the Superintendent. His previous assignments include the Legal Office, the South Zone Area Captain for the Criminal Investigation Division, Records Division Assistant Commander, Lieutenant of the Criminal Intelligence Section and Special Investigation Section, which encompasses Vehicle Theft Unit, White Collar Crime Unit, Cybercrime Unit and Crimes Against Children.  Captain Marté also developed and commanded the Indiana State Police Security Threat Group Unit, which monitors and controls gang activity occurring at special events in Indiana.  This past year, Captain Marté, who is bilingual in both English and Spanish, was appointed as the first Equity and Inclusion Officer of the Indiana State Police.

Nathan Williamson (R)

Nathan is an eleven year veteran of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He began his career in law enforcement in 2009 spending two years in the Monroe County Reserves before joining the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as a full time Deputy in 2011. Nathan served as a Sheriff’s Deputy for 4 years before being promoted to Sergeant in the Patrol Unit. He has held that position for seven years. Nathan holds an AAB in Business where he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Eastern Gateway Community College. Nathan is currently working on his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Central State University. He is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and has attended countless specialized law enforcement trainings.
