Since August 2021, Skye Nicholson founded Soul's Truth Coaching, LLC where she coaches women to their self-created goals around personal empowerment, alcohol use, or anxiety reduction, by providing tactics and tools to take charge of their thoughts.

Skye is a native of Chicagoland and moved to Columbus, Indiana, about 7 years ago with her husband and two children. Although her undergraduate degree is in Environmental Engineering, she taught high school science for ten years in inner-city Chicago before becoming a stay-at-home mom when her first child was born.

What motivated you to start your own business? How did you develop the skills to start your own business?
As both of my children were nearing school-age, I began to feel the itch to figure out what I was going to do with this next phase of my life. I had taken alcohol out of the driver’s seat of my life in 2018 and began writing a blog to share my story. I found that people were responding to my writing in a positive way, and wanted to expand the ways that I could bring women together in healing spaces.
Healing circles and non-medical mental health support, especially designed specifically for women’s issues, are resources that are difficult to find in my community. I wished that there were more of these spaces available, so I decided to become a part of the solution.
In March of 2021 I began coach training through This Naked Mind Institute and started hosting women’s empowerment circles in Columbus. I found that empowerment coaching (also called “Life Coaching”) uses a lot of the same mental muscle as teaching: I am inspiring people by guiding them to discover their own truths and unlocking their strengths.

What inspires your work and what sets you apart from everyone else?
My business is built out of the obstacles I have overcome. I know firsthand how challenging it is to face down your demons and open yourself up to the level of vulnerability necessary to turn your life around. I know it is possible to emerge from darkness and rediscover the joy in life. My reason for creating Soul’s Truth Coaching is to shine a light for other women who may be stuck by the inertia of their negative thought patterns or addictive behavior.

What makes your business stand out from other businesses in Bloomington?
I offer one-on-one coaching services to women and women-identifying persons around topics of empowerment, anxiety-reduction, non-medical mental health issues, and control of alcohol and nicotine use. My approach to coaching is based on compassion and empowerment and all sessions can be conducted virtually on Zoom.
I don’t believe there is anyone else locally certified in This Naked Mind “Control Alcohol” Coaching. This program is unique in that I encourage my clients to set their own goals around alcohol use (including moderation), and I am not based in the 12-steps.

Have you won any awards or had any special recognition or acknowledgement of your business?
  • Featured on several international podcasts, including: This Naked Mind Podcast, Present & Sober Podcast (UK), SoberTrain Podcast, and Salty Moms Gone Sober Podcast
  • 2021 recipient of the Indiana Arts Commission On-Ramp Entrepreneurial Grant
  • Top Writer in Poetry on medium.com in April 2021

What has been your biggest success to date?
The publication of my first book Unexpected Alchemy: Poems of Addiction and Awakening in December of 2021 was the culmination of a childhood dream. I hosted the book launch party on January 7, 2022—the four-year anniversary of my sobriety journey. The book is my story of personal transformation as told through the art of poetry. As a coach, one of my roles is to guide people towards tools for processing life’s challenges, and writing

What has been your biggest challenge?
As a mom to two school-age children, I am always looking for extra hours in the day! Creating my own schedule allows me to spend lots of time with my kids, but it can be challenging to make time for writing and networking opportunities.

What are your plans for the future of your business?
In the next year I plan to offer group workshops and coaching sessions to businesses and schools, providing strategies to help manage stress, anxiety and work-life balance. I am also releasing a guided journal by the end of this year.
