Our community’s largest annual food takes place on Saturday, May 10 when the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 828 will sponsor Stamp Out Hunger. All food collected in Monroe County will be delivered to Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Postal customers need simply put a food donation at their mailbox on May 10 and their letter carrier or a volunteer will collect it and bring it back to the post office where HHFB staff and trucks will be waiting. Any non-perishable food items are welcome, with canned meat, canned fruit and canned vegetables at the top of the needed list. Customers are asked not to donate expired or open food or glass jars. Last year’s food drive brought in 36,179 pounds of food and organizers hope to top that amount in 2025. “Food pantry lines are still very high and with the recent loss of some federal commodities, it has become harder for us to meet the need,” said HHFB Executive Director Julio Alonso. “We count on this food drive to supply us with a large amount of food and this year it is more important than ever. We’re hoping for a big response.” “Letter carriers look forward each year to helping our communities as we fill our trucks with your food donations,” said NALC Branch 828 President Joshua Peterson. “The food drive happens rain or shine! We invite our customers to join in America’s great day of giving and help “Stamp out Hunger.”
Financial donations to support food purchases can also be made by using the QR code on soon to be distributed Stamp Out Hunger postcards or by visiting www.hhfoodbank.org. All Monroe County postal addresses should receive a post card and donation bag next week. Volunteers willing to use their vehicles to collect food from certain routes are needed and in the coming weeks volunteers will be needed to sort food in preparation for distribution. Contact Ryan at [email protected] if you can help! Stamp Out Hunger is a nationwide effort sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, US Postal Service and Rural Letter Carriers Association. In Monroe County the food drive is also supported by Kroger and United Way of South Central Indiana. Food collected in Monroe County will go to Hoosier Hills Food Bank for distribution to its nearly 90 partner agencies. Food collected in other areas will be delivered to a variety of local hunger relief agencies.
