Pat East Resigns from Role as Executive Director of The Mill

The Mill announced today that Pat East, Executive Director since its inception, is resigning from his role as Executive Director.

Reflecting on his time leading The Mill, Pat East shared, “It has been the honor of a lifetime to help build The Mill into what it is today. Over the past six years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible impact this organization has had on Bloomington’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a passionate team and a vibrant community of innovators. As a leader, it never quite feels like the right time to leave, but I’m 100% confident in the team and excited for them to build on the momentum we’ve created together.”

Under East’s leadership, The Mill has become a cornerstone of Indiana’s startup ecosystem, fostering growth, innovation, and entrepreneurship. From securing several multi-million-dollar grants to building strong partnerships with the City of Bloomington, Indiana University, Ivy Tech, Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and NSWC Crane, East laid the foundation for a thriving organization. In addition to these partnerships, The Mill has also built several high-value programs including Flywheel Fund, Bloomington Remote, Crossroads, and Innovation Week. With the Trades District, all of this has significantly contributed to positioning Bloomington as a rising hub for tech and innovation in Indiana.

“This marks the close of a truly transformative first chapter for The Mill,” said Board Chair, Ravi Bhatt. “Pat East’s vision and dedication have laid a remarkable foundation, helping to shape Bloomington into a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. We are grateful for his leadership and the lasting impact he has made.”

Under East’s recommendation, The Mill Board of Directors has unanimously appointed John Fernandez, currently Senior Vice President of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, as Interim Executive Director. East will work closely with Fernandez and The Mill staff through April 1 to ensure a seamless transition.

“We’re thrilled to have John Fernandez as Interim Executive Director,” said Bhatt. “With his extensive experience in economic development and investing in entrepreneurs, he is uniquely suited to guide this transition. Together with Victoria Crawley’s expert leadership in operations and support from our partners, The Mill is well-prepared for the next chapter.”
