Parks and Recreation Supports Mental Health Awareness Month with Programs and Resources

Parks, nature offer pathways to wellness for all ages

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, Parks and Recreation is highlighting the powerful role that parks, green spaces, and time in nature play in supporting emotional and psychological well-being.

The American Psychiatric Association and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services both report rates of anxiety, depression, and social isolation are rising nationwide. At the same time, numerous studies by the Mental Health Foundation, the Mayo Clinic, and others confirm that spending time in natural settings can enhance mood, improve focus, and reduce depression.

"Parks and trails are where connection happens-whether it's with nature, friends, or yourself," said Health and Wellness Coordinator Shelby Drake. "They offer space to slow down, breathe fresh air, move your body, and engage with others in a relaxed, welcoming environment."
There are 32 parks and more than 30 miles of trails in the City's Parks and Recreation system that provide the Bloomington community with opportunities that are nearby and cost nothing to access. Additional, structured parks and recreation programs also encourage physical activity, social interaction, and mindful breaks outdoors.

Fitness in the Park drop-in, group classes in tai chi, ZUMBA and yoga take place on the main stage outside at Switchyard Park, 1601 S. Rogers St., on weekdays May through August. Pre-registration is not required; just drop in for $10 per class. Walking with Ease, a program designed to alleviate chronic pain through regular group walks, includes 20- to 40-minute, instructor-led walks on paved trails three times a week. There is no cost to participate in Walking with Ease, but registration is required; contact Shelby Drake or call 812-349-3771 for more information.

Parks and Recreation is offering "Rooted in Nature", a peaceful, forest bathing experience led by a certified professional, at three different city parks in June, as well as a session of "Paws and Pose Puppy Yoga", an outdoor yoga class with puppies! For more information about these classes, or to register, visit Parks and Recreation's fitness and wellness website.

Parks and Recreation is committed to ensuring city parks and trails serve as places of peace, restoration, and connection. All are invited and warmly welcomed to enjoy a moment outside this May!
