New Map Lets Residents Identify Habitat Corridors Across Bloomington

The City of Bloomington has relaunched a new interactive Habitat Connectivity Map that allows residents to contribute directly to local conservation by pledging greenspace for wildlife conservation. The map identifies existing and potential habitat corridors, helping connect isolated natural areas across the city.

Developed by the City’s Bloomington Environmental Commission in partnership with the Planning & Transportation and Information & Technology Services departments, the project prioritizes conserving habitat, linking fragmented areas through greenspace corridors, and enhancing habitat quality in urban and suburban areas.

Residents can participate by planting native species, removing invasive plants, and marking their efforts on the map. Even small contributions—such as planting a native garden, a rain garden, or a single tree—can help form larger habitat corridors through neighbors’ combined efforts.

“This map is a powerful tool for visualizing how the community can contribute to restoring and connecting native habitats,” said Rachael Johnson, Senior Environmental Planner with Planning & Transportation. “Together, we can improve biodiversity and make Bloomington more resilient.” 

Pledges will be shown on the map, creating a visible network of restored greenspaces between three Priority Greenspace Areas. The map is designed to inspire action, foster community pride, and highlight Bloomington’s growing network of connected habitats.
