This fall, Constellation kicks off its 25/26 Season with Next to Normal, playing September 4-21 at the Waldron Auditorium. Back by popular demand, after being previously seen in Cardinal Stage’s 2012/13 Season, this award-winning rock musical, will be directed by Kate Galvin (The Wizard of Oz, Matilda the Musical). Experience the electrifying Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical that delves into the heart of a family shattered by mental illness but held together by love. Diana Goodman, a suburban mom battling bipolar disorder, struggles to connect with her ambitious daughter and devoted husband as they navigate the chaos of Diana’s condition. With a soaring, unforgettable score by Tom Kitt and poignant book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, Next to Normal is an unflinching, empathetic portrait of resilience, loss, and the pursuit of hope. Hailed by The New York Times as a “transformative,” “feel-everything” musical, this modern masterpiece is a must-see theatrical event. Next to Normal stars Alex Keiper, returning after Constellation’s 2024 production of The Break: A New Rock Musical, as Diana Goodman. Starring as her devoted husband Dan is Ben Michael, a New York-based actor who was featured in the Original Broadway Cast of Paradise Square and the First National Tour of An American in Paris. Rounding out the Goodman household are IU Musical Theater student Claire Summers as Natalie and Baldwin Wallace Musical Theater student Gabriel J. Hill as Gabe. Henry, Natalie’s boyfriend, will be played by Jonah Broscow, an IU Musical Theater student previously seen in The King’s Wife, and Dr. Fine / Dr. Madden by John Armstrong, a local actor previously seen in Holmes and Watson.
At the helm of this production is Kate Galvin, former Artistic Director of Constellation Stage & Screen, and director of past productions such as The Wizard of Oz, Matilda the Musical, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical! and Fun Home! Joining the creative team are Music Director Ray Fellman (Professor of Musical Theater at Indiana University), Choreographer Laura Rong, Scenic Designer Chris Haig, Lighting Designer Jennifer Fok, Costume Designer Katie Cowan Sickmeier, Sound Designer Brandon Reed, Assistant Director Cassie Hakken, Stage Manager Topher Rohrer, Assistant Stage Manager Chelsea Pell, and Sound Mixer Eric Doades. Next to Normal runs September 4 - 21 at the Waldron Auditorium (122 S Walnut St) and tickets are on sale now! Tickets start at $35 for adults and $20 for students. In addition to traditionally priced performances, Constellation offers Pay What You Will Thursdays for all Thursday evening performances. Supported by Jessika and Bryan Hane, this program allows audiences the chance to choose their own ticket price (starting at $13) when attending on Thursday evenings.
