City of Bloomington Earns Top Global Recognition for Environmental Transparency, Climate Action

5/30/2025

The City of Bloomington has been recognized as a leader in environmental transparency by CDP, a global nonprofit that runs the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system for companies, capital markets, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts.

Bloomington received an ‘A’ score based on its disclosure in 2024—the top status achievable through CPD’s scoring system, which recognizes global leadership in environmental transparency, climate action and resilience planning. Only 112 cities worldwide earned this status, 29 of which are in the United States—the most of any country.

“We are grateful for all of the City departments, residents, businesses and nonprofits that are working together to make climate action a reality every day in Bloomington,” said Shawn Miya, Assistant Director of Sustainability for the City’s Economic and Sustainable Development Department. “It is an honor to be recognized by the CDP for our hard work and dedication to increasing our triple wins from climate actions, such as improving quality of life, reducing utility costs, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.”
Earning a spot on CDP’s A-List is a significant achievement that reflects the highest standard of local climate leadership. To achieve this status, cities must publicly disclose through CDP-ICLEI Track, a climate reporting platform, and meet rigorous criteria. This includes a city-wide emissions inventory, a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and a published climate action plan.

Bloomington and other A-List cities demonstrate that local leadership drives climate innovation, infrastructure investment and economic opportunity. Transparent disclosure through CDP-ICLEI Track provides a platform for cities to track progress, engage communities, and unlock increased access to funding to accelerate solutions and strengthen long-term community resilience.

“Congratulations to Bloomington for earning a spot on CDP’s A-List,” said Katie Walsh, head of climate finance for cities, states and regions and North American lead of CDP. “Bloomington is leading by example by disclosing transparently how it is prioritizing and integrating climate resiliency and sustainability across their city. From investing in infrastructure to building stronger local economies and creating jobs, American local governments on CDP’s 2024 A List are forging ahead on climate action.”
