City of Bloomington Announces Temporary Road Closures in June, July

The City of Bloomington will temporarily close a portion of Grimes Lane/Patterson Drive in late June and early July 2026 for City-led infrastructure improvements, while additional closures on College Avenue and Walnut Street during this time frame will occur for private development projects.

Details on the upcoming closures are as follows:

College Avenue
Closed between Third Street and Smith Avenue from June 30 to July 24 to facilitate the Bloomington Convention Center expansion. Rogers Street will reopen on June 26 and will serve as the primary detour route, with local access available from Smith Avenue and alleyways. Access to Convention Center parking will remain available from Madison Street and Smith Avenue.

Grimes Lane/Patterson Drive
Closed between Rogers Street and Walnut Street from June 29 to July 13 to facilitate infrastructure improvements. First Street will serve as the primary detour route.

Local access to Switchyard Park, the bus depot, and nearby businesses and residences will be maintained via the following schedule:

• June 29 – July 6: Grimes Lane will be closed west of the northernmost Switchyard Park entrance, which will be accessible from Walnut Street.
• July 6 – July 13: Grimes Lane will be closed east of the northernmost Switchyard Park entrance, which will be accessible from Rogers Street.

Walnut Street
Closed between 17th Street and 19th Street starting on or after June 29, for approximately two weeks to facilitate required utility upgrades associated with “Hub 2,” a new housing development under construction. The primary detour will be via Dunn Street. Local access to all adjacent properties will be maintained. 

These closures are coordinated to minimize disruption while supporting infrastructure investment. The City’s Engineering Department is working closely with contractors, utility providers, and public safety officials to ensure access for residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles. Rogers Street between Second and Third streets is expected to reopen by Friday, June 26.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow posted signage, and use caution when traveling near construction zones.
