Beginning with the August/September 2025 issue, Bloom Magazine will begin celebrating its 20th year of publication in Bloomington, Indiana. The magazine was officially founded in November 2005 with the first issue published in August 2006. Malcolm Abrams, then 60 and a recent arrival from New York City, was the founder, editor, publisher, and sole employee in the early years, working out of his home in downtown Bloomington. For the past 14 years, Bloom offices have been located at 414 W. 6th St. Today, Abrams is still active but Bloom has three full-time staff: Executive Publisher Cassaundra Huskey, Managing Editor Rodney Margison, and Associate Publisher Sydney Zulich. Freelance designer Rosalie Sherwood and editorial intern Lily Marks round out the team. Over the years, Bloom has also given work to scores of writers, photographers, artists, designers, and journalism student interns.
The four missions of the magazine are to support local businesses, the arts, local charities, and diversity. Bloom annually presents awards to individuals and organizations who contribute to these missions. Bloom has been honored with more than a dozen local community awards and nearly 200 editorial awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). In 2018, Abrams was honored with the SPJ Gene & Julie Slaymaker Service to Journalism Award and in 2024, he received the Outstanding Craftsmanship Award from The Stone Age Institute and Indiana University CRAFT Research Center.
