City of Bloomington to Make E 6th Street Safer with Change to Back-In Angle Parking From Front-In to Back-In, between Walnut and Washington

To improve visibility and safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, the City of Bloomington is converting the on-street parking on E 6th Street between Walnut and Washington streets to back-in angle parking.

Following a scheduled repaving on November 26 and 27, all 41 existing front-in parking spaces will be restriped into back-in angle parking. This adjustment will also combine two parking spaces to include one accessible parking space with an aisle on the northwest corner of the block. A message board will be placed at the beginning of the block before and after the street is repaved and restriped to guide drivers and indicate where the back-in angle parking begins.

“This change is all about giving drivers a clear view when leaving a parking spot, removing the need to back blindly into oncoming traffic,” says Ryan Robling, Planning Services Manager of the Planning and Transportation Department. “By reversing into a space, drivers can see approaching cars, cyclists, and pedestrians when they pull out, reducing risks of crashes.”

Hoosier Hills Food Bank at Canopy of Lights Ceremony

11/18/2024

Once again, Hoosier Hills Food Bank will be present during the annual Canopy of Lights ceremony on the Courthouse Square the day after Thanksgiving to collect donations.

HHFB will have a tent just east of the stage on Kirkwood Avenue and will distribute Children’s Art Calendars and lighted wrist bands to anyone making a non-perishable food or financial donation.

“We’re excited to be back as part of the lighting ceremony for the Canopy in order to raise awareness that there is still a high level of food insecurity in Bloomington and Monroe County,” said HHFB CEO Julio Alonso.  “We’re grateful to Downtown Bloomington and the Monroe County Commissioners for the opportunity to participate in this great tradition. The timing of the canopy lighting matches perfectly with the theme of our annual holiday campaign, which asks ‘What happens when the leftovers are gone?’ as a reminder that people need food assistance all year long.”

The Canopy of Lights ceremony will take place on Friday, November 29 at 6pm and include entertainment, remarks from public officials and a visit from Santa Claus, who will do the honors and light up the canopy around the courthouse square.  The food bank tent will be open from 5pm until after the end of the holiday program and lighting of the square.  Donations of any non-perishable food items are welcome with canned meats, fruits and vegetables being most needed.  Financial donations will also be accepted.  Any donors will receive an HHFB 2025 Children’s Art Calendar and/or a novelty lighted bracelet while supplies last.

If you’re not attending the Canopy celebration, you can donate to HHFB at www.hhfoodbank.org or by sending a check to PO Box 697, Bloomington, IN 47402.
