The City of Bloomington announced the return of Winter Wonderland, a free holiday celebration for local children and their families, at the Banneker Community Center (930 W. 7th St.) on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from noon to 4 p.m.
This special event, hosted by the City of Bloomington, brings the community together to celebrate the joy of the season with activities for all ages, including photos with Santa, holiday crafts and cookie decorating, and a gift giveaway. This event is made possible through the generosity of volunteers and community members. To volunteer or contribute, visit the Commission on the Status of Black Males website at bloomington.in.gov/csbm. The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission today announced that Bloomington has received a score of 100/100 on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). This marks the tenth consecutive year that Bloomington has achieved this top score.
The MEI examines 506 American cities to rate how inclusive their laws, policies, and services are for the LGBTQ+ residents. Criteria include the presence of non-discrimination laws, the availability of municipal services to LGBTQ+ individuals, and the public stance of city leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. This year, a record-breaking 130 cities earned 100 points. “Now, more than ever, our LGBTQ+ community needs our city to stand firm to its core values that have been in place for over 50 years,” says Ryne Shadday, Chair of the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission. “The new MEI score is an accomplishment, but we can always improve and show that we will not let our most vulnerable citizens down in one of the most important times in our country and state's history.”

The event was a collaboration between the Garatoni School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, held at Ivy Tech’s Yellowwood restaurant.
More than 50 students and community members attended the event, featuring expert speakers, panel discussions, and locally-prepared cuisine. “Ivy Tech is proud to be a partner and supporter of the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and we are grateful to everyone who participated and shared expertise for the benefit of our students and community,” Sueann Graham, entrepreneurship program chair said. Parks and Recreation announced today the Bicentennial Gateway at Miller-Showers Park, 1500 N. College Ave., is finished and the vehicle crossover between College Avenue and Walnut Street has re-opened. The Bicentennial Gateway is a wall approximately 52' long and 10' high, composed of stacked limestone blocks. Powder-coated aluminum letters spelling "BLOOMINGTON" are mounted to the limestone.The letters are backlit at night with soft white light.
