Chilly Cook-Off is coming to support Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard

10/21/2025

We’ve pulled out the crockpots, and the dehydrators are full of spicy peppers. Recipes are being adjusted as Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard prepares for our annual “Chilly” Cook-Off. The Cook-Off will help launch Freezefest on the evening of Friday, January 23 at the Switchyard Pavilion (1601 S. Rogers St.) from 5 to 7 pm.

Community members are invited to register their chili to see if they can earn the People’s Choice Award or catch the attention of a panel of judges and earn Best Overall, Best Vegetarian, or Most Creative recipes. Registration for chefs is free, but closes on Wednesday, Jan. 7 or when all spaces are filled.

While space is limited to 25 chefs, the community is invited to join the Cook-Off and sample what each chef brings to the table, then cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award. Six brave attendees can also sign up at the event to join the Some Like It Hot contest, racing their way through an extra spicy chili. Tickets for the Chilly Cook-Off can be purchased online, with additional tickets available at the door.

Bloomington Earns Two-Year Bird Town Recertification from Indiana Audubon

10/20/2025

Designation reflects city, county investment in bird habitat, environmental stewardship

Indiana Audubon has recertified Bloomington as a Bird Town Indiana community, recognizing ongoing investments by Monroe County, the City of Bloomington, and conservation partners including the Sassafras Audubon Society and Monroe County-Identify and Reduce Invasive Species (MC-IRIS) in bird habitat, environmental stewardship, and public engagement.

Since its initial Bird Town certification in 2016, Bloomington has expanded its commitment to sustainable landscapes and wildlife corridors. The city's Climate Action Plan, formally adopted by Bloomington's Common Council in April 2021, specifically addresses greenspace and ecosystem health through increasing the use of native plant species, restoring pollinator areas, expanding the tree canopy, and identifying low-mow and no-mow areas on city property and in rights-of-way. Learn more about the City of Bloomington's Climate Action Plan.

The City Parks and Recreation urban greenspace and urban forestry programs have made significant contributions to improving the quality, and increasing the amount, of bird and pollinator habitat. Volunteers helped plant 70 trees in the neighborhood surrounding Crestmont Park to celebrate Arbor Day in 2024, while expanded no-mow zones near Winslow Sports Complex increased the abundance of insects that provide better food sources for birds.
