Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson will hold a Traveling Town Hall on Thursday, November 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sherwood Oaks Church, 2700 E Rogers Road. The event will be divided into two sessions, each aimed at engaging with different segments of the Bloomington community.
The first town hall, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., is open to all Bloomington residents. Attendees will interact with local government officials, ask questions, and gain insight into various city projects and services. City Council members Courtney Daily and Matt Flaherty are expected to attend. The second session, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., will be focused on the Hispanic and Latinx community. Translators from Iglesia Hispana Sherwood Oaks will be available to ensure accessibility and facilitate participation. Council member Isak Nti Asare will join this discussion. These Traveling Town Halls are part of the Thomson administration’s broader initiative to make local government more accessible and responsive. Held every other month in different districts, the meetings provide a platform for residents to connect with their representatives, voice concerns, and stay informed about ongoing city initiatives. Upon arrival, attendees will receive index cards to write down questions or comments for the mayor and council members. Mayor Thomson will start the event with a brief update on current city projects before addressing the submitted questions. The session will conclude with a live Q&A if time permits. For more information, please contact the Office of the Mayor at 812-349-3406 or visit the City of Bloomington’s website at bloomington.in.gov.

The Bloomington Arts Commission (BAC), in collaboration with the Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, has announced the launch of the 2024 Community Ar Grant program. The initiative will provide 10 microgrants, each up to $1,000, to local artists, community groups, neighborhood associations, and businesses to develop public art projects throughout Bloomington.
Now in its second year, the Community Art Grant program was established alongside the release of the 2023-2027 Public Art Master Plan. The Plan seeks to empower City residents to support, invest in, and take advantage of Bloomington’s rich legacy of local public art and culture. It also showcases examples of past public art projects and includes tools to enable local artists, community members, neighborhood groups, small businesses, and others to realize their own public art projects. Applicants for the Community Art Grant are encouraged to review the Public Art Master Plan before submitting proposals. Projects should align with the values and goals outlined in the plan, demonstrating both strong community engagement and support from local residents or stakeholders. Detailed information about the grant, eligibility and criteria, and the application are available here. “Together the Public Art Master Plan and the Community Art Grant program will help provide accessible pathways for community members looking to further engage with public art,” said Public Art Committee Chair Natalie Almanza. “These tools and resources aim to support and empower our creative community.” Applications for the grant will be accepted on a rolling basis through Monday, December 2, 2024, at 11:59 PM. Interested applicants can access the application form here. Carpenter Realtors Bloomington is celebrating its hard-working staff that have made exemplary strides for September & for the 3rd quarter! The City of Bloomington has discontinued curbside vacuum leaf collection as of 2023, following two years of study and feedback from thousands of residents. Mulching and composting leaves in your yard, along with using the City’s yard waste collection program, have been identified as more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Mulching and Composting in Your Yard The most eco-friendly option is to mulch or compost leaves in your yard, turning them into natural fertilizer. The City offers online resources, including videos and articles, to help residents learn more about mulching and composting. Yard Waste Collection Residents who prefer to have leaves collected can use biodegradable paper yard waste bags or yard waste carts. There is no fee for leaf collection in November, but collection fees ($1 per bag/cart) will resume in December. The Public Works Department will partner with the Fire Department to provide free brown paper leaf collection bags. Packs of 5 bags will be made available to residents at no cost on a first-come, first serve basis. Residents may claim these bags at any City of Bloomington fire station. Supplies are limited to 2 packs of leaf bags per person and proof of City residency is required. For a map of fire station locations, please see https://bloomington.in.gov/sites/default/files/2023-07/fire-stations_230707.png The Bloomington Fire Department (BFD) is participating in Fire Prevention Week with a focus on this year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” BFD has scheduled field trips to fire stations and classroom visits to teach students about fire safety.
While the theme centers on smoke alarms, firefighters will also cover topics such as calling 9-1-1, avoiding matches and lighters, and creating home fire escape plans. Fire Prevention Week, which has been observed for over 100 years, educates the public about reducing the risk of home fires. BFD offers these key smoke alarm safety tips:
