Parks and Recreation to Evaluate Implementation of Recommended ChangesThe Board of Park Commissioners at their Oct. 15 meeting heard a presentation by Zionsville, Ind.-based consultant Zec Eight Insights, who highlighted the results of the summer 2024 evaluation of the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market.
The Park Board at their Jan. 23 meeting approved a contract with Zec Eight Insights to conduct the Farmers' Market study for a total cost of $20,000. The year 2024 marked the 50th season of the city's Farmers' Market, making it a fitting moment to conduct a comprehensive review of Market operations. This milestone, combined with the lasting effects of the 2019 vendor controversy, the post-COVID era's impact on food production and sales, and evolving farmers' market trends, made it an ideal time for this study. In response to recent resident inquiries about drinking water taste and odor, the City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has introduced coconut-based powdered activated carbon in its treatment process. This innovative addition improves taste and odor for a fresher drinking experience. The water remains safe to drink and continues to meet all state and federal primary drinking water regulations.
Taste and odor variations in drinking water often stem from natural compounds like methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin, which originate from algae and other organic sources. While these compounds are harmless, they can create a musty taste or odor even in very low concentrations. CBU sources water from Lake Monroe, which supplies the Monroe Water Treatment Plant, serving Bloomington and Monroe County residents. To manage taste and odor, CBU employs several treatment methods, including copper sulfate, sodium permanganate, and the newly added coconut-based powdered activated carbon to improve results further. Despite these methods, during warmer or drier conditions, residents may still notice earthy tastes or odors. The utility is also researching water quality parameters at different depths in Lake Monroe to optimize these changes in treatment techniques. Nov 2: Bloomington Book Festival at Morgenstern Books!
Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington is hosting the Human Library® Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Shreve Hall. The Human Library, a free event, creates a safe space where topics are discussed openly between human books and readers.
Human books are volunteers with personal experience with their topic. Difficult questions are expected, appreciated, and answered. "The Human Library is a comfortable way to learn about topics that might be new to us. It fosters honest communication that respects individual experiences,” Christine Brandel, professor of English and event coordinator said. “The interactions increase our sense of empathy and acceptance, while reminding us of what we all share, the resilience of the human spirit." At The Hawaiian Hoosier, our Live Aloha Keiki (Kids) Club is dedicated to teaching the importance of community and kindness, encouraging children to make small yet meaningful contributions. Every month, the club hosts a new activity designed to help young participants connect with their community in positive ways. This November, we’re excited to bring a little extra warmth to the season by encouraging children to spread joy through their artwork.
For this November’s project, we're asking Keiki Club members to create five cheerful fall-themed drawings that reflect what they’re thankful for. Whether it’s colorful leaves, pumpkins, cozy sweaters, or family gatherings, these happy images will be collected at The Hawaiian Hoosier at 120 W Temperance St in Ellettsville. For every five drawings turned in, the little artist will receive a special reward as a thank-you for their contribution. Each picture will then be shared with residents of local Assisted Living Facilities, helping to bring smiles and a sense of connection to those who may need a little extra brightness in their day. The Live Aloha Keiki Club believes that making a difference doesn’t always require big resources or a lot of time. This activity is perfect for kids who want to give back from the comfort of their homes without spending any money. It's a simple act of kindness that carries a huge impact, illustrating that even the youngest members of our community can spread happiness and make the world a little brighter. WFIU Public Radio and WTIU Public Television will host an open house on Thursday, November 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Radio-TV Building on the Indiana University Bloomington campus (1229 E. 7th St.). Light hors d'oeuvres, desserts, and beverages will be provided. More information is available at indianapublicmedia.org/events.
