September is Hunger Action Month Courthouse to "Go Orange" for Awareness

8/29/2024

September is Hunger Action Month and Hoosier Hills Food Bank and Feeding America are encouraging one million actions across the country to end hunger. During the month-long campaign, HHFB will be raising awareness and inspiring action in Monroe, Brown, Lawrence, Martin, Orange, and Owen counties.  Every action counts whether it’s donating, advocating, volunteering, or spreading the word online.

“We can end hunger in the U.S. when we decide to work together with coordinated action and a shared belief that everyone deserves fresh, nutritious food,” said Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America. “This year during Hunger Action Month, we are encouraging everyone to take action. Raise your voice. Volunteer. Donate. Our individual actions may seem small, but together they become a powerful movement that can change history.”

HHFB CEO Julio Alonso noted that the food bank plans to build a theme of coming together to end hunger around this year’s election cycle.  “It’s no secret that there are many things dividing us, especially during a contentious national election.  But we believe that fighting hunger is a campaign we can all get behind. Whether you’re red or blue, we’re asking everyone to “Go Orange” in September as a show of unity in the goal of ending hunger.”

Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) is happy to announce its September event to help local cat and dog owners keep their animals safe and healthy.

On Sunday, September 1, 2024, MCHA and Monroe Fire Station 24 will host a pop-up mobile vaccine clinic located at 7606 E State Road 45, Unionville, IN 47408. MCHA’s veterinary team of volunteers and staff will be available from 1-3 p.m. with no appointment needed; all are welcome!

Mobile Clinics offer a range of services, including legally mandated rabies vaccines for pets aged 12 weeks (about 3 months) and older. Additionally, clinics provide nail trims, anal gland expressions, microchips, and preventive measures for flea, tick, and heartworm.

Subsidized rates are available to residents experiencing financial hardship. To qualify for these rates, residents should bring valid documentation with them to the Mobile Vaccine Clinic. Safety is paramount. Cats must be in carriers, and dogs must be leashed (no retractable leashes). It’s essential for pet owners to understand that pets showing signs of illness or aggression might be turned away.

Solar Battery Primer for Bloomington Indiana

8/28/2024

Picture
Explore how solar batteries can fortify your home or business against rising energy costs and benefit from new government incentives.

The Role of Solar Batteries in Home Energy Systems

Solar batteries serve as a critical component in residential energy systems, particularly for homes equipped with photovoltaic (PV) panels. They store the energy generated by the solar panels during the day, which can then be used at night or during peak electricity demand periods when energy prices are higher. This not only allows for greater energy independence but also ensures a consistent supply of power during outages or cloudy days, enhancing the overall efficiency and reliability of home energy systems.

By integrating solar batteries into your home energy setup, you create a buffer against the volatility of the grid, reducing your reliance on traditional power sources. This can lead to significant savings on electricity bills and contribute to a more sustainable household by maximizing the use of renewable energy.

Cost Analysis: Investing in Solar Batteries

Investing in solar batteries involves an initial upfront cost that can vary widely depending on the capacity, technology, and brand of the battery. On average, homeowners might expect to pay anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 for a solar battery installation, though prices are continually evolving. When considering the cost, it's important to factor in not only the price of the battery itself but also installation fees, potential incentives, and the long-term savings on energy bills.

Despite the initial expense, the investment in solar batteries can be financially beneficial in the long run. Reduced electricity costs, increased home value, and potential earnings from selling excess energy back to the grid are factors that can contribute to a favorable return on investment. It's advisable to conduct a detailed cost-benefit analysis, taking into account your specific energy usage patterns, local utility rates, and available incentives.
