Commission on the Status of Black Males to Greet Students on Fairview Elementary's First Day7/29/2024 The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males (CSBM) will join area fathers, father figures, caregivers, mentors, and role models to welcome students back to school in person on Wednesday, August 7 at 8:30 a.m. at Fairview Elementary School, 500 West 7th Street.
Volunteers can register at bloomington.in.gov/csbm and will be expected to adhere to health and safety guidelines, posted at the registration site. The event marks the eight local observance of the Million Fathers March (MFM), part of a national opportunity for dads, uncles, grandfathers, coaches, mentors, clergy, men’s groups, and organizations to show their commitment to the educational lives of their children and children in the community throughout the school year by escorting children to school. Although this event was created for Black men, CSBM encourages men and women of all races, nationalities, and faith backgrounds to support them by taking their children to school on the first day. CSBM also encourages males who are unable to join the MFM at Fairview to get involved with a local school to support youth in Bloomington in other ways. On her transcendent new record, Workin' On A World, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe, pandemic illness, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world, but implores us to love each other, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces. Her debut record Infamous Angel, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary, was recently named one of the “greatest country albums of all time” by Rolling Stone, and the two albums that followed, My Life and The Way I Should, were both nominated for GRAMMYs. The City of Bloomington Seeks Community Feedback on Indiana Avenue Safety and Improvement Concepts7/23/2024 The City of Bloomington’s Planning and Transportation Department is calling on residents to provide feedback on initial safety and improvement concepts for Indiana Ave. This initiative comes in response to concerns raised through a community survey, which gathered input from about 250 people about improving Indiana Ave. According to the survey, only 43% of residents feel safe along the Indiana Avenue corridor and less than 20% of bicyclists express a sense of safety.
The project aims to address these safety concerns through two proposed concepts:
Residents can complete a feedback form regarding these proposed concepts via an online survey at bton.in/inave. The survey will remain open until Sun, Aug. 4. The third public meeting for further design review and feedback will take place on Tues, Aug. 13, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sample Gates. For more information, contact the Planning and Transportation Department at 812-349-3423 or visit the City of Bloomington’s project web page at bton.in/inave. Indiana businesses and residents affected by severe storms and tornadoes on June 25 are eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman announced today.
Administrator Guzman made the loans available in response to a letter from Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb on July 17 requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA. Businesses and residents in the declared area can now apply for low-interest disaster loans from the SBA. The declaration covers Monroe and Vigo counties and the adjacent counties of Brown, Clay, Greene, Jackson, Lawrence, Morgan, Owen, Parke, Sullivan and Vermillion in Indiana, and Clark and Edgar in Illinois. “The SBA is strongly committed to providing the people of Indiana with the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist businesses of all sizes, homeowners and renters with federal disaster loans,” said Guzman. “Getting businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our highest priority at SBA.” After a fun-filled summer of camps, Constellation is thrilled to kick off the school year with a robust line-up of fall classes, running September through December. With after school, evening, and weekend options for Littles (grades K-2), Kids (grades 3-6), Teens (grades 7-12), and Adults (ages 18+), there is a little something for everyone. As a fresh take on previous class formats, Constellation is excited to offer ensemble-focused classes that celebrate the collaborative and community-building nature of the performing arts.
This fall, each ensemble-based class will be working on material from a specific show or genre. Classes include Treasure Island for Littles, Acting Ensemble for Kids: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Broadway Kids Chorus, Found Footage Filmmaking for Teens, and Musical Theater Workshop: The Broadway Ensemble for Adults, and more. Constellation’s Education Director, Eric Shelley, has seen first-hand the impact of his programming. “Getting a front-row seat to students’ artistic journeys from week to week allows me to witness personal growth of the individual as well as the ensemble as a whole. Whether it’s a class of 1st graders or a class of adults, the communities being built within the walls of Constellation Studios have a strong and enriching collaborative foundation resulting in more confidence, composure, and authentic self-expression across the board.” |
