The City of Bloomington Citizens’ Redistricting Advisory Commission held its first meeting on Monday, July 11th to begin developing recommendations for new district boundaries that divide the city into six council districts. The Commission’s next two meetings will be held at City Hall on July 25th at 7:30 pm and August 9th at 9:30 am. All meetings of the Commission are free and open to the public.
The Commission now invites the public to submit redistricting suggestions for the Commission’s consideration. Any member of the public wishing to submit suggested council district boundaries should do so before the Commission’s August 9th meeting. Submissions may be sent to [email protected]. Acceptable forms of submissions include, but are not limited to: · Maps depicting proposed council districts (PDF, image file, physical copy, etc.) · List or table of districts and the precincts contained in each district (Excel file, Word file, text file, etc.) * For any form of submission, it should be clear what precincts are contained in each district. A webpage, https://bloomington.in.gov/council/redistricting, has been established to house information, and resources meant to aid both the Commission and public in creating redistricting proposals. This webpage contains the Commission’s meeting calendar and meeting materials, links to two different interactive mapping tools, and a link to the city’s B-Clear data portal, which includes static maps, data files, and a district calculator spreadsheet. ![]() This summer, CanopyBloomington launched its inaugural Youth Tree Tenders Program, a paid work program for local high school students that trains and educates teenagers about the benefits of trees, tree maintenance, and other professional development activities. This year, CanopyBloomington has partnered with the City of Bloomington to contract the maintenance of trees in Switchyard Park to students in the Youth Tree Tenders Program. With skilled, on-site training by Canopy’s Forestry Director, Hannah Gregory, the students are receiving hands-on experience with tree planting, pruning, and watering procedures that are conducive to growing well-established and healthy trees for the enjoyment and benefit of the Bloomington community. Four local high school students – Althea Childers, Jordis Kieffer, Jason Lin, and Grant Hodson – have been hard at work learning these new skills. Jordis Kieffer, a Junior at Bloomington High School South, says, “Working as a Youth Tree Tender helps our local environment; the work we do will have a long-lasting impact in a positive way by providing better urban canopy around Bloomington.” Training will evolve over the course of the summer to adjust to the needs of the growing trees. Doug Johnson & Ann Harrison knows what it takes to provide quality in-home care to area seniors, and the growth of their Bloomington and Columbus Comfort Keepers ® franchise is a testament to that know how. Johnson and Harrison recently received recognition for outstanding revenue generation, the Top Performing Multi-Unit award, during the national Comfort Keepers Leadership Connect Conference in Anaheim, California.
The Top Performing Multi-Unit award is given to the Comfort Keepers franchise owner whose multiple units have generated the highest average per-unit revenue for the previous calendar year. “To be recognized at the national level is a great accomplishment,” notes Harrison. “I am thrilled to own a business that can help seniors live as independently as possible and stay in their homes for as long as possible. I am also very proud to be able to contribute to the local economy with a growing business.” Indiana Members Credit Union is sponsoring a charity golf outing and all net proceeds will be given to the Teachers Warehouse. Created in the 1940s, the Sagamore is one of the highest honors in the state of Indiana, awarded by the governor as a personal tribute to those who have rendered distinguished service to the state through their wisdom, public commitment, and concern for the well-being of others. Issued by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, the award was presented to Green by State Senator Eric Koch (R-Bedford) during a ceremony held in her honor on June 29 at Stone Belt in Bloomington, Indiana. “It is an honor to present Leslie Green with this prestigious award,” said Senator Koch. “Leslie has exemplified the qualities of wisdom, public commitment, and concern for the well-being of others in her distinguished service to the citizens of south-central Indiana.” Before her retirement in April, Green had served as CEO of Stone Belt since 2000.
