City of Bloomington Announces Temporary Through-Traffic Closure on Rogers Street Between 2nd and 3rd6/11/2026 The City of Bloomington will temporarily close Rogers Street between 2nd Street and 3rd Street from Monday, June 15, through Friday, June 26, as part of the Patterson/Grimes/Rogers resurfacing project. Local access for residents and businesses will be maintained—through traffic should follow posted signage.
The City’s contractor requested the closure to complete critical work on Rogers Street before the nearby Bloomington Convention Center expansion work begins. City Engineering reviewed and supports the request. This closure is separate from the Rogers Street closure near Switchyard Park, which is scheduled to reopen today, June 10, with a new raised pedestrian crossing. Drivers should slow down and adjust to the new crossing, which is designed to improve pedestrian safety near the park.

The City of Bloomington announced today that Planning and Transportation Director David Hittle has accepted a position with the City of Charlotte, North Carolina. His final day with the City of Bloomington will be July 10.
Hittle has served as Planning and Transportation Director for the Thomson administration since April 2024, helping guide the department during a period of significant work around housing and development. As part of that work, the City has identified opportunities to clarify and streamline its internal processes, regulations, and review timelines so Bloomington can build more housing and strengthen its economic future. “David has brought steady leadership and a strong commitment to the people of Bloomington during a critical chapter,” said Mayor Kerry Thomson. “Importantly, he has led public engagement and laid the groundwork for UDO changes, and my administration will announce Bloomington’s upgraded permitting process prior to his departure. Creating more housing options so residents can afford to live here is my top priority. The work David has done to create a path forward will lead to significant changes in the months to come. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him the very best in Charlotte.” The City of Bloomington is seeking residents, business owners, property owners, and other community members to serve on a new Steering Committee for the Gateway North focus area, one of several areas identified in the City’s 2018 Comprehensive Plan for additional focused planning. Gateway North focuses on the area roughly bounded by N Rogers Street to the west through N Dunn Street to the east, which includes Millers-Showers Park and N College Avenue and N Walnut Street.
The City’s 2018 Comprehensive Plan identified several focus areas where additional planning would help guide future investment, redevelopment, and public improvements. As the first official focus area plan intended for adoption into the Comprehensive Plan, the Gateway North plan will establish a long-term vision, goals, and strategies for the area’s physical, social, and economic development. Community input will help shape recommendations for infrastructure improvements, public investment, and future development. Growing a business can be lonely. Many business owners know where they want to go but struggle to find the time, focus, and accountability needed to get there. The Bloomington Growth Collective is a new 8-week cohort designed for Bloomington-area business owners who are committed to growth and ready to work on their business, not just in it.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) recently released guidance for Indiana communities regarding the state’s process for recommending census tracts for designation under the new federal Opportunity Zone 2.0 program.
First created through federal legislation in 2017, Opportunity Zones are a federal economic development tool designed to encourage long-term private investment in eligible low-income communities through a series of tax incentives tied to qualified investment funds. The program is intended to help attract capital to areas with redevelopment potential by supporting projects such as housing, commercial development, business growth, and other community investments. The City of Bloomington has been following the updated federal program closely and preparing for Indiana’s upcoming recommendation process. |
