Mayor Kerry Thomson announced that she has officially named Desiree DeMolina to serve as Communications Director for the City of Bloomington. DeMolina comes to the role from Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, where she occupied the role of Communications and Marketing Manager. “Desiree brings a breadth of experience and expertise in marketing, communications, and operations in the arts, economic development, and not-for-profit sectors,” said Mayor Thomson. “Her career focus on community engagement and connection will be instrumental in transforming the way the City communicates and shares information with residents, City employees, and stakeholders.” To increase safety, connectivity, and accessibility along the Indiana Avenue corridor around downtown and the Indiana University campus, the City of Bloomington is considering protected bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian crossing improvements, and bus stop improvements.
The City of Bloomington will host public meetings later this spring and summer to gather feedback on potential infrastructure improvements to create a safer corridor for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. The first public meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 5:30 pm at the Sample Gates to discuss project scope and objectives. The Indiana Avenue corridor has experienced one of the highest amounts of severe traffic collisions in recent years within Bloomington. Since 2018, there have been nine traffic collisions along this corridor resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. In its current state, there are gaps in the bicycle, pedestrian, and transit network that can be improved. With the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries, this project is a crucial step toward allowing all street users to travel through Bloomington safely and comfortably. Dr. Sue Ellspermann, the ninth president of Ivy Tech Community College, today announced she will retire in June 2025, at the end of her current contract. She joined the College in 2016 after serving as Indiana’s fiftieth Lieutenant Governor. “Few positions afford the opportunity to change lives, strengthen communities and fuel our workforce and economy, and I am honored to have led this remarkable institution,” said Ellspermann. “I am forever grateful to the students, faculty, staff, trustees and community partners who trusted me to help Ivy Tech reach new heights in service of our students, employers and the state. I am deeply proud of what we have achieved together and have full confidence that Ivy Tech will continue to deliver on its mission as Indiana’s workforce engine and springboard for social and economic mobility.” Under Ellspermann’s leadership, Ivy Tech aligned its more than 70 degrees and credentials to the workforce needs of Indiana employers while launching dozens of innovative new programs, including the nation’s first smart manufacturing and digital integration pathway. Her administration also led an enrollment resurgence at Ivy Tech’s 19 campuses across the state: More than 195,000 students enrolled in academic year 2023-2024 – the College’s highest headcount since 2014. More than 90,000 of these students are still in high school, making Ivy Tech the leading awarder of early college credits in the country.
