The City has received no reports of employees’ having received a positive result of a COVID-19 viral test since the last public update on March 18. The last case of COVID-19 among City staff was announced Thursday, February 25.
Since the start of the pandemic, 72 positive COVID-19 viral test results have been reported by City workers, including those employed by the municipal corporations that operate the water utility (City of Bloomington Utilities), transit system (Bloomington Transit), and public housing (Bloomington Housing Authority). Sixteen total cases were reported during the eight months from March through October 2020. That monthly rate rose more than eight-fold in the single month of November to 17 cases, and rose another 29% in December (22 cases). January saw that monthly rate decline 41% to 13 positive cases. February saw a total of only four employee COVID-19 cases, representing a 69% decline from January’s monthly rate. No cases have been reported thus far in March. The Mill, Bloomington’s nonprofit center for entrepreneurship, announced today the start of the second cohort of Flywheel Fund, its member-managed capital fund for early-stage and high-potential startups. Flywheel Fund I launched in the summer of 2020. The first cohort of 11 members planned to make four investments of $25,000 in a year. By January 2021, the fund had exceeded expectations, investing $120,000 across five companies in less than six months. The second cohort has quadrupled membership to 50 investors and grown the investment fund to $640,000—an increase of over 500%.
“We’re seeing a lot of excitement around the opportunities in Indiana right now,” said Mill Executive Director Pat East. “When we launched Flywheel, we knew promising startups existed here. With critical investment at the right time, the opportunities for innovation and investment can increase exponentially. In five years, the startup and investment landscape in southern Indiana in particular is going to look very different. The snowball is starting to roll.” German American Bank has announced its sponsorship of this year’s EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee. After sponsoring the inaugural event in 2020, German American Bank is excited to once again offer access to this nationwide challenge taking place April 1-15, 2021. The financial literacy course is available for students and their parents and features an essay scholarship contest open to high school students (ages 13-18). Those submitting an essay have the opportunity to win a college scholarship up to $10,000.
New this year, German American Bank will be awarding an additional $2,000 to winners within its market area. Four winners will be chosen, two in Indiana and two in Kentucky, with each to receive a $500 savings account. Bloomington has been named a Tree City of the World by the Arbor Day Foundation. Tree Cities of the World is a program founded by The Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to recognize cities around the globe that have committed to growing and maintaining their urban forest.
Bloomington has earned recognition in the Foundation's second year of the program, which requires that cities meet five program standards demonstrating a commitment to planting and conserving trees for a greener future. Bloomington's commitment to its urban forest was first acknowledged in 1984, when Bloomington became the first city in Indiana to receive Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. The designation requires that a city maintain a tree board or commission, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita (Bloomington's is more than $8.50 per capita), and an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation. The city has successfully met all the criteria to retain its Tree City designation every year since 1984.
