We are proud to congratulate Galen Cassady, General Manager and co-owner of Uptown Cafe, on his appointment to the Capital Improvement Board (CIB) — a critical body guiding major public investments in the expansion of the Monroe Convention Center. Rooted in Local Business and Community Galen's connection to Bloomington runs deep. Uptown Café, founded by his father in 1976, has been a cornerstone of Kirkwood Avenue for nearly five decades. What began as a family venture has become one of downtown's most enduring institutions. It is known for its hospitality, local flavor, and welcoming atmosphere. Step inside Uptown and you'll witness its role as a true community crossroads: where city council members grab breakfast, business leaders hold informal meetings, and local fixtures are greeted by name. As General Manager, Galen has championed not only his business but also downtown vibrancy and thoughtful urban planning. His leadership helped navigate evolving street uses — including expanded outdoor seating during seasonal closures — always to create an inviting, economically healthy downtown environment. Investing in Downtown's Future Galen's commitment to Kirkwood Avenue extends well beyond Uptown Cafe's doors. Just across the street at 115 E. Kirkwood Avenue — the former CVS site — the ONE15 Lofts on Kirkwood is taking shape: a 5-story residential condominium project designed by local architecture firm Ratio. Galen is the commercial partner within the development, where his company, Cassady Hospitality, will launch a new 2-story restaurant concept of his own vision — not generic retail, but another thoughtfully designed gathering place that reflects his decades of hospitality experience and deep understanding of what downtown needs. This development represents more than a business expansion; it's a statement about downtown Bloomington's potential and a tangible investment in the district's residential, culinary, and community future Civic Insight Beyond Business Galen's civic engagement extends well beyond hospitality. In September 2024, he was appointed to the BEAD Advisory Committee as part of the CIB's work to expand the convention center. This role reflects his understanding that vibrant downtowns require more than commercial activity; they also need culture and creative expression that bring communities together. Beyond the arts, Galen has engaged thoughtfully in local planning issues, bringing a balance of business insight and community perspective to public deliberations about downtown design and public space utilization. His approach to Kirkwood Avenue exemplifies this: supporting pedestrian-friendly outdoor dining while recognizing the importance of thoughtful traffic patterns. This reflects his ability to see multiple sides of complex issues. Galen has also advocated for leveraging Food & Beverage tax revenues to expand tourism capacity, particularly through investments like the Convention Center expansion — a priority for economic development, visitor attraction, and downtown growth. What Galen Brings to the Capital Improvement Board With this appointment, Galen brings invaluable experience and perspective:
Looking Forward The CIB oversees some of the county's most significant investments. Galen's appointment brings practical wisdom earned through decades of community engagement, cultural advocacy, and active investment in downtown's future. Congratulations, Galen Cassady! We look forward to the positive impact your leadership will bring to Bloomington-Monroe County. By: Christopher EmgeSenior Director of Government & Community Relations
