CALL TO ACTION: Support the Convention Center Expansion

The City of Bloomington Council meeting is happening soon, and we need YOUR voice! On March 5th at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, the Council will vote to approve the bonding for the Convention Center Expansion — this is the last hurdle before we can move forward with funding the project, and we need YOU there! ​

Why It Matters: 

• The Monroe County Convention Center is a key asset for our local economy, bringing in visitors, events, and tourism dollars. 

• Expanding the convention center will enhance downtown Bloomington, creating new economic opportunities and revitalizing our community. 

• Local charities and civic organizations depend on large venues for fundraising and outreach. An expanded center will allow them to do more good. 

🔹 What to Say at the Meeting: 

• Support the Convention Center Expansion as a vital economic development project. 

• Thank the Capital Improvement Board (CIB) for their excellent work in moving this project forward and ensuring the management of this major initiative is in capable hands. 

• Encourage the City Council to approve the resolution for bond funding — this is the final step needed to get the project fully funded and started. 

• Stress the importance of action now, as delays only increase costs and the opportunity for Bloomington to miss out on future tourism, events, and business opportunities. 

• Highlight the benefits for local businesses: More tourists = more sales for locally-owned businesses, from restaurants to shops. This facilitates commerce for Monday through Thursday, the summer months when small businesses suffer, thus creating a 12-month economy

1. Attend the City Council meeting on March 5th at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. HERE by Zoom  
2. Prepare a brief statement in support of the Convention Center expansion, using the talking points above. 
3. If you cannot attend, send an email to Council members in support of the project — let them know why you think it’s crucial for our community’s growth and future. 

This is our chance to make history and ensure Bloomington’s future as a thriving destination for business, tourism, and civic engagement. Let’s cross this last hurdle together! ​
